Do you know T.K. Soul? I started listening to him a couple of years ago and have been a huge fan ever since. I have several of his CDs and this song is one of my favorites. I know, I've got a lot of favorite songs from a lot of artists, but you can't help who you like - can you? :) In this song, he has a friend who was feeling guilty about what he was doing and thought his wife knew he was fooling around. He wants to tell her the truth and admit to his wrongdoing. And then this same friend's wife has a talk with T.K. and, suprisingly, tells him that she's been messing around and needs to come clean with her husband. His advice to both of them is to keep it to yourself! Before you tell on yourself, remember, you didn't get caught. Get it out of your mind; don't be no fool. It ain't cheatin, till you get caught.
Awesome, awesome, awesome.
It's Saturday morning and I need to hear some Johnnie Taylor. He was the master of love songs and this one shows how much he cares about his woman. He starts with "I feel sorry, I feel sorry..." Then, he says that he feels sorry for any man out there when he can't look around and say this is my woman, my woman alone. He also feels for any woman out there who can't say she has somebody that she can call her very own. But my favorite part is when he says he heard her mother say that loving him didn't make any sense but when she put him down she stood up to his defense. And he says that anytime you stand up against your own mother it makes him know that she believes in him.
This JT song is a classic and is towards the very top of my favorites list. The music is incredible. Although it's not a fast song, it makes me get up and move every single time I hear it. I love it when he asks, "What's wrong with big fat Sally doing her own thing?" Here are some of the words towards the end:
I want to tell you about a friend of mine
She was 92 years old
One thing I liked about her
She sure had a whole lot of soul
I said girl folks are talking about you
All in the neighborhood
They said all them young men you’ve got
They sure don’t mean you no good
She told me one thing
If I live to be 99
If young men kill me
You know what she told me
She said I sure don’t mind dying (Yoohoooo, and this is where the heavy bass line comes in…)
That’s when I made up my mind, I made up my mind that same day
I was going to do my own thing
Give like I want to give
Go where I want to go
Play where I want to play
Love like I want to love
I’m doing my own thing
I heard this song over the weekend and fell in love. Cicero says that he's a married man always on the run but he's into something that just won't leave his mind. He's got a part-time woman that he loves all the time. This is southern soul at its finest.
This song is for Red, one of the fabulous friends I've met in the Southern Soul Radio chat room - she likes Bobby Blue Bland and B.B. King. Bobby always turns the crowd out when he sings this song (and, oh yes, he's great in concert)!
Have I told you that I'm a Tyrone Davis fan? No, well one day I'll have to let you know about the many songs of his that I love. You probably think I love a lot of artists and it's true, I do. There's just so much good music out there. I was so fortunate to see Tyrone Davis perform several times and he was really great. Here are some of the words to one of Tyrone's most beautiful love songs - Close To You:
I can’t wait to be by your side
And I don’t understand this feeling but it’s thrilling me
Your love is like a hurricane I just can’t tame
And I just want to be close to you
When your lips touch mine, girl, it’s so satisfying
I get a strange sensation because you’ve changed my situation
Your love is like a hurricane, I just can’t tame
And I just want to be close to you.
Everything I do, honey, I do it just for you, and
I can’t think of nothing better I’d rather do...
It's Friday nite and I needed a Johnnie Taylor fix. Ah, so many memories and this is one of my many favorite JT songs (I probably have a lot of favorites). I love the intro so much that I'll play it about four times before I listen to the whole song. "I think we better find another meeting place...."
Are you familiar with Jeff Floyd's work? He's a great southern soul singer and I have a couple of his CDs. One song of his that I fell in love with was "I Found Love On A Lonely Highway." Another one of his hits is "You Had It All" and it's a catchy song that makes you move. Love it.
Thought I'd do something different for a hot minute and add this video to my Paradise collection. My brother-in-law and nephew are talented musicians and when you throw in the voice of my sister, you end up with an amazing, original video. In honor of Mardi Gras, here goes Fat Tuesday 2011!
I was addicted to this song for a long time. I can't explain it....my family thought I was crazy. Well, they still think I am but that's another story. (smile) This song makes me get up and dance. I don't know if it is the beat or the melody but the music does something to me every time I hear it and I can't sit still. Some of the lyrics are pretty risque (and they're really out of character for me...well, sort of) and I find myself turning the volume down on certain parts when my kids around - and they're in their 20s! But, David Brinston has done an awesome job on this song and I love it.
I love Johnnie Taylor. I really do. I think he is one of the greatest southern soul artists of all time. This is a song from my teenage years and it's one of his many hits. It always gets to me when he says "I'm as lonesome as I can be...." I'll probably spotlight his music over the next few weeks so you can hear some of my favorite songs. Here is one that brings back so many memories.
