Tyrone Davis - "I Got Carried Away"

My throwback Thursday song!!  "I Got Carried Away" is at the top of the list of being one of my very favorite Tyrone Davis songs.  I love this and played it so much that my sons also know it - word for word!

Have you ever heard a certain song that immediately brings back memories?  "I Got Carried Away" is about a guy who is driving home but hears 'their' song and starts thinking about the past and his love for his girl.  He got so carried away that he missed his turn. You know how that is!

To 94 said the highway sign, I should be home by now, home just in time to lay her down to sleep and pray the Lord her soul to keep, love, oh love, oh love! By the time I got started in the right direction, the dee jay on the radio was playing another selection  But our song was still on my mind, memories lingered on of how you have been so kind.  Oh I just, baby I got carried away.

Wow, this song brings tears to my eyes!!  Thinking about a time when you were so good to me!

Oh I just, baby, I got carried away.  And before I knew it, I was ten miles out the way...

Toia Jones - "You Can Get It"

Toia Jones was the best ever contestant on "The Voice!" I still think she should have won last year and I'll never forgive Levine for passing her by...I've got to let that go. lol  I am so proud of her for being the great singer and performer that she is and here's her latest single.  It was produced by Bigg Robb and you can hear touches of him throughout the song.  Enjoy!!

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings "I Learned the Hard Way"

I heard this song some time ago and really liked it; it's from their 2010 album titled the same, "I Learned The Hard Way."  This is more soul music than southern soul, but it's all good.  Check out southern soul artist Lee Fields in the beginning and throughout the video.

Watch Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings tonight on Michael Buble's Christmas Special, 8pm on NBC.

Enjoy!

Till 1 - "Ohhh Baby"

Ohh Baby hit the charts in Mobile and is popular down south.  She's got that ooh baby!  I love seeing younger artists keeping southern soul music alive.

The melody sounds a little familiar but I can't put my finger on it just yet.  I think Daddy B. Nice got it right when he said it starts out like Tucka's "Don't Make Me Beg."

Enjoy!

O.B. Buchana - "Swing On"

Here's O. B.'s latest single.  It's getting a lot of airplay on southern soul music stations and is growing in popularity every day.  It's a great dance song.  O. B. says that all he wants to do is get on the floor and dance the night away with his girl.

Let's swing on!!

Enjoy!

Ronnie Lovejoy - "Lonely Christmas"

I know all of the classic Christmas songs but I tell you, this is my favorite of them all.  It is so depressing but Ronnie sings this from deep in his heart and you can't help but feel sorry for him.  He just wishes that he had someone to spend Christmas with him.  His baby let him on a night while he was sitting at the Christmas table writing out his Christmas list.  She left him a present under the Christmas tree and there was a note inside that she said was leaving him.  He said this is the saddest time of the year for him because it brings back old memories of when his baby was there.  Oh, that's so sad.

And I love it!!

What a lonely place to be, I just wish I had someone to spend Christmas with me!!

Jeff Floyd - Singing From The Heart With Soul

Do you know what it feels like to meet someone you’ve listened to, have sung along with, watched his videos, bought his CDs, and have loved for a mighty long time?  That’s how I felt when I met the legendary Jeff Floyd.  What a feeling!!  I even have some of his earlier CDs on my very old iPod and often listen to his music when I’m traveling or relaxing at home.  It was a joy to see him perform and an honor to talk with him.

I got a chance to sit down with Jeff Floyd after the recent Heavy Hitters of Soul Show in Pomonkey, Maryland, and he is just as amazing as his music.  Jeff is from Jacksonville, Florida, and is very passionate about southern soul music.  He says that he’s trying to keep the music alive.  Jeff blends in the sounds of many original R&B/blues artists and his goal is to keep the music going.  He says that we will lose the music if we don’t keep performing it and recording those sounds.

We had a discussion about the music and artists of today.  As we all know, southern soul artists get paid a whole lot less than their counterparts and I personally think that they work a lot harder.  They have a hard time getting major record labels to push their music and so artists usually have to touch base with dee jays throughout the country.  They will develop a rapport with them, maintain a good relationship and network as often as they can, and hope that the radio station will play their music.  They find that when one station plays their song and realize how much people like it; they’ll keep playing it.  When a record is popular on one station, another station will usually pick it up and the cycle keeps going.

Jeff says that his music is all about singing from the heart with soul.  He is one of the performers that’s trying to keep the old sound alive and brings an old spirit and old flavor to his music.  I love his music and you can hear his work if you turn on the radio and listen to any southern soul station anywhere.  He’s a true legend.

There were several things I saw in Jeff that night while he was on the stage:
--He knows how to have fun!
2         --He is very friendly and has a great personality!
3.        --He knows how to engage a crowd!
     --He is a true entertainer!
4         --He has a tremendous voice!
.          --He sounds just like his records!!!

Here is a list of the songs he sang that night:
How You Want It
I Got My Woman Upset
Lock My Door
Try A Little Tenderness
It’s You (a very beautiful ballad)
You Had It All
Shake Something Loose
Somebody’s Gonna Lose A Good Woman
Love on a Lonely Highway

Here are just a couple of my favorite Jeff Floyd songs.  There are so, so many more.

Don't forget to connect with Jeff Floyd on his Facebook page.

Jeff Floyd's a remarkable performer who sings from the heart with soul and is keeping the music alive.  See his show as soon as you can!

J. Red - Concert Review

Impressive.  Yes, that's the word I would use to describe J. Red!  I went to the Heavy Hitters of Soul show last Friday in Pomonkey, Maryland, and had an awesome time.  Our M.C., the ever-so-wonderful Dr. Nick, did a great job with spinning records before the show and announced all the acts. The show opened with the home-town favorite Hardway Connection, then moved to the legendary Jeff Floyd, and ended with the impressive J. Red.

I have been listening to and enjoying J. Red's music for awhile now and am so thankful that I was able to interview him a couple of months ago. (see http://southernsoulparadise.blogspot.com/2015/10/j-red-nephew-man-behind-music.html).  It was a thrill to meet him in person.  He is truly a down home guy and is one of the nicest people I've ever met. He is very humble and you would never know he is one of the hottest soul singers around. On stage, he's a natural star; he knows how to captivate the audience and take over the stage.  Even though we seemed to be in a place where a lot of people really weren’t familiar with southern soul, J. Red knew how to engage everyone and get people on the dance floor.

He sang all of his hits and even taught us his line dance song –“ Step Out.”   See the video below and learn the steps so you'll be ready to dance when you get to his show.

J. Red has a smooth voice and I love watching him perform.  Here's a list of the songs he sang that night:

Outstanding
Never Too Much
Hole In The Wall
Give It To Me
Love On You
Let’s Get Away
Step Out
Ms. Grown & Sexy
Keep On Dancing
I Will
Good Thang

Go see J. Red whenever you get a chance - he is worth it!!
