The Duchess Jureesa McBride - "Karma (She'll Take Care of You)"

I LOVE this song and Jureesa McBride's voice is amazing!   Karma is an absolutely beautiful song about payback; what goes around will surely come back around.  The Duchess tells a story about the guy she was with for 13 years, yes, she was the woman on the side.  But the day finally came when they got caught and the man's wife told her that karma is a fool that wears high-heeled shoes and just when you think she's through, she'll take care of you.  And wouldn't you know, after she left this guy and found a man of her own, the woman's words crossed her mind and the same thing happened to her.  Her guy had someone else on the side.  What goes around and around, sure has to come on around again.  Karma will chew you up and spit you out.  Preach girl!!

Happy Birthday Marvin Sease!

Happy birthday Marvelous Marvin Sease!!  Boy, do we miss you! Today is his birthday and I just wanted to take a moment to celebrate this legend and remember all of the wonderful music he left with us. Marvin was a dynamic performer and loved his audience.  I know, I was there with him through several of his shows - what a thrill!  He was an entertainer and put his best into each performance.

Here's his bio that I took from the Soul Blues Music website (http://www.soulbluesmusic.com/marvinsease.htm):

Born Feb. 16 1946 in South Carolina Mr. Sease got his start by joining a gospel group in nearby Charleston called Five Gospel Singers and later when he was 20 he sang with the Gospel Crowns. But soon his heart was in R & B and he put together Sease, a backing band featuring his three brothers. When this went nowhere, Sease himself put out several 45s, and eventually scored a regular gig at a Brooklyn nightspot called the Casablanca. Sease recorded a self-titled LP in 1986 featuring one of his most popular songs, "Ghetto Man," and began working the South's so-called chitlin circuit of ghetto bars, rural juke joints, and blues festivals. While shopping the LP, released on his own Early label, to record stores, Sease stumbled upon a contact who eventually got him a deal with Polygram, which re-released the LP on London/Mercury in 1987 with the addition of the newly recorded, ten-minute track "Candy Licker." "Candy Licker" became an underground success on jukeboxes across the South; it was too explicit for radio airplay, but audiences - especially female ones - flocked to see Sease in concert. He thusly fashioned himself as a smooth, X-rated ladies' man but he sings soul blues and gospel-drenched soul with salacious lyrics that also appeals to male fans of southern soul.

Marvin was so versatile and he left us with a lot of excellent music. I'm posting "Candy Licker" here because that was part of his legacy. I think it had a huge impact on music and changed the way a lot of artists wrote and sang their songs. The "Candy Licker" lyrics were so far out there but we loved it all anyway!  Here's one of my many, many favorites of his, "Please Take Me." He created so much great music beyond "Candy Licker" and the southern soul world will forever remember this legend and what he's done for the music industry.

Johnnie Taylor - "Back Street Love Affair"

I've posted tons of Johnnie Taylor songs but I've somehow missed this one. As you probably know, JT is my all-time favorite blues/southern soul singer and I'm so thankful I was able to see him a few times before he passed - he was an amazing performer. "Back Street Love Affair" is a beautiful ballad.

Nathaniel Kimble - "You Make Me Happy"

I've been admiring Nathaniel Kimble's music for years.  I love this love song - he says his girl makes him happy, she keeps a smile on his face, each and every day.  He works hard all day and can't wait till he gets home.  When he gets there, she's cooking collard greens and cornbread!  Now that's some southern love!  When he's broke, she even gives him some cash to help him through.  He says all his friends wonder what he's laughing at all the time because she keeps him smiling. That's love.

Here are a few lines from his bio:
Nathaniel Kimble was born in Beniot, Mississippi, a small town 15 miles northeast of Greenville, Mississippi. It was here that Nathaniel found his talent for singing as he sung in the church choir. Even though he loved gospel music dearly he had a keen interest in the blues. Nathaniel collected blues singers' music from all around the world and learned their lyrics. He was inspired by well known artists such as, the late Tyrone Davis, Johnny Taylor, Marvin Sease, and Willie Clayton. He finally realized it was time to to put his talent in front of an audience and started singing in an area club where the crowd showed much appreciation.

Donnie Ray - "You Keep Taking Your Love Away"

I have loved Donnie Ray since "A Letter To My Baby."  Here's a song that can be found on his 2013 "Drowning In My Own Tears" album. It's a sad song of how his girl keeps taking her love away from him. He may want to lay off some of those bottles of Hennessy. lol

The Classic Pick of the Week was Shont Dont Dont by my home boy, the late, great Frank Mendenhall.

The new song on the list this week is Willie Clayton's "Your Man Is Home Tonight" - a pretty nice remake of Tony Troutman's 1988 hit.

The surprise for me this week was the omission of "Swing On" by O. B. Buchana.  It has been sliding up the charts for weeks now and was even #3 last week.  It didn't make the cut this week but stay tuned, you'll never know what may happen next week!

Congratulations to the very beautiful "Living A Lie" for another week at #1 and you know I'm still loving "Good Thang!"
