Karen Wolfe brought us "If You're Man Enough to Leave" and I LOVE this song. I've got on my dancing shoes, I'm in a southern soul party mood!!! Now here we go...hit the floor..!!! Check out this video of line dancing to her song! Debra, I thought about you when I saw this - I know you're going to get the steps right! Can't wait till we hit the party with this!!
I am a T.K. Soul fan. "They Wanna Party" is another make-you-move dance song and I love the beat and the music. T.K. Soul gets to the parking lot at the club, checks himself out (looking fly in his frames), and steps out of the car feeling like a star. (T.K. baby, you are a star!) And yes, everyone wants to be with him and party with him. This record is on his "The Evolution of Soul" CD which has plenty of great hits such as "Zydeco Bounce" and "Rehab." Check out some of these lyrics:
You got your smoke
And you got your drink
Girl get on the floor
Baby shake that thing
You feeling right
It’s on tonight
And we’re doing it old school
Just like you like
Chorus
I be up in the club
They be showing me love
And they want to dance with me
And they want to party with me
In the VIP
But they can’t see me
But they want to dance with me
And they want to party with me
You know how you don't miss what you've got until it's gone? Ronnie Lovejoy sings about a man who had the love of his life and didn't realize it until she left. He deeply regrets what he's done and misses her so much; he thinks about her from sunup to sundown. Their paths cross in the grocery store one day and she asks him if he ever thinks about her. He tells her not much, just from Monday to Sunday. "Think About You All The Time" is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard. I'm trying to get a copy of this CD but it's out of circulation and the only way I can get it is to take a chance and order it from an individual via Amazon. I just heard this song a few minutes ago on southernsoulradio.com and here are most of the words:
It's been six months since she’s been gone
I think about her all the time
I just can’t help it, I think about her all the time
There’re still memories of her here
In every room
And oh in the bedroom
I still smell her favorite perfume
She was all I ever wanted
But I didn’t realize it then
If I had one more chance
I wouldn’t make the same mistake again
If you ask me if I still think about her
If I’d say no, I’d still be lying
I think about her from Monday to Sunday, sunup to sundown
I think about her all the time
I often wondered how could I ever let this be
The woman I fooled around with
She fooled around on me
She took everything I had and left
I ain’t got no outside woman
I ain’t got no inside woman
I’m just lonely by myself
I saw my baby at the grocery store the other day
Thought she wouldn’t speak to me
But she started walking towards my way
She said Ronnie, do I ever cross your mind?
Not much
Just Monday to Sunday
I think about you all the time
I just can’t help it baby
I think about you all the time
I hope you'll get a chance to hear this beautiful song
by the late, great Ronnie Lovejoy.

There's something about an older guy with gray hair who can SING! Oh yes! If you've seen Latimore live, you know what I mean. He's just as dynamic now as he was years ago. We remember "Let's Straighten It Out" but "My Give A Damn Gave Out" will be another classic that will be remembered for years to come. This song is about how tired you can get. You know, you love your man so much and you stay with him even though he keeps messing up. But after awhile, you get tired and you get to the point where you just can't take it anymore. And this girl is tired. All of us, both men and women, have been there at some point in our lives. Here are the words to this great song:
I used to run around a lot
Sometimes I’d stay out all night long
But she would always take me back
No matter how long I’d be gone
But I came home early one morning
The woman didn’t even open up the door
All she did was just look through that little peep hole
She said baby, you don’t live here no more
I said woman it’s cold out here
Please let me in
She said why don’t you go back where you’ve been
She said my give a damn gave out a long time ago
She said I don’t believe you heard me, I’ll say it again
My give a damn gave out a long time ago
I said please, please, please baby can we talk it over
I promise I’ll never do this again
And she said, no baby, ain’t nothing else to talk about
You started acting just like a whole lot of other men
She said I’m tired of crying
And I’m tired of your lying
I’m tired of giving you another chance
I forgave you over and over and over and over again
But you just couldn’t keep that thing in your pants
So listen to me, that’s it!
I quit!!
I ain't takin’ no more of your….
My give a damn gave out a long time ago
In case you didn't hear me, I'm going to say it again
My give a damn gave out a long time ago
Ah yes, this is one of those delicious Quiet Storm kind-of-songs. It's what you put on the turntable (or CD player) late at night. I loved Leroy Hutson's version of this song when it came out back in the 70s and Willie Clayton has done a beautiful remake of it. This song brings back memories and I love both versions. Check out both of them!
I don’t know what you have got girl, no baby,
Or just what keeps you on my mind
I just know that you can do the things you do to me
Each and every single time
Cause I’m so in love with you
Said I’m so in love with you
You just say you need my love girl
I‘ll be right there by your side
You don’t have to be so particular with me, honey
I’m the one who’s begging this time
Cause I’m so in love with you
Said I’m so in love with you
Tell me, can you understand me girl
I don’t think you do sometime
I keep telling you that you’re the one that rules, woman
Be with me through endless times
Because I’m so in love with you
Said I’m so in love with you
So in love…
This is one of those songs that grew on me and although I don't understand some of the words, I'm getting it a little more and more. I love this song! It has a catchy beat and it will make you get out of your seat and dance. And, there's a cool instrumental part in the middle of the song. All I know is that there's a party and the music is right. You will like this song!
Here's the chorus - check out the song.
Are you gonna party with me tonight
Oh, it’s time to get started
Are you gonna party with me tonight
Oh it’s time to get down
Everybody out there on the dance floor
Let me hear you make some noise
If you're still sitting in your seat
Get up and let me hear you scream
Party with Mendenhall tonight!
I know some Mendenhalls near Possum Bend and I have always wondered if they're any kin to this Frank Mendenhall!
Enjoy!

What a beautiful duet between J. Blackfoot and Ann Hines! Their voices blend together and the result is a very, very pretty song. They say that just one lifetime of loving you won't be enough. She says that if the beat of her heart suddenly stops, her love will keep on ticking like a clock. Wow! And he says that you are my breath, every beat of his heart, his soul, and his strength! These are the powerful words of someone deeply in love. Beautiful!
Just one lifetime
Of loving you, honey
Won't be long enough
I'll love you 'til all the rivers run dry
My loving turned to dust
If the beat of my heart should suddenly stop
My love will tick on just like a clock
Seasons may come and seasons may go
I'm with you come rain, shine, sleet, or snow
I'll love you 'til all of the rivers run dry
'Til the sun and the moon fall from the sky
Just one lifetime
Of loving you, honey
Won't be long enough, oh don't you know that
I'll love you 'til
All the rivers run dry
My loving turned to dust
Truer than true, deeper than deep
My feelings for you will always be
Solid as a rock my love will remain
Stronger than steel it'll never change
You are my breath every beat of my heart
My soul and my strength
Honey, that's what you are
Enjoy!

The unmistakable voice of Johnnie Taylor on "Drown In My Own Tears" is timeless. He always created amazing ballads and he sings this one from the heart. He tells his girl that she ought to come on home so he won't be all alone. If you've left, this will make you want to go back! The legendary Ray Charles made this record many years ago and Johnnie Taylor's remake of it turned a really good song into a great one!! It definitely sounds like the blues and I can hear just a hint of gospel. The words, melody, and JT's voice make this a beautiful song.
It brings a tear to my eyes
When I begin to realize
I’ve cried so much oh since you‘ve been gone
I’ve almost drowned in my own tears
I sit and cry, oh just like a child
My pouring tears they’re running wild
If you don’t think
Oh that you’ll be home soon
I said I believe I’m going to drown right now baby in my own tears
I just needed my Johnnie Taylor fix!
Enjoy!!

I'm getting what I want, I'm just not getting it where I want it from! Wow, that is classic southern soul. Don't you agree??? The melody is fantastic and the beat makes you want to get up and move. It's great house party music! This is the first Peggy Scott-Adams song I ever heard and I've adored it for years. It never goes out of style. This is a timeless story of having that perfect man but not being totally happy because you really want that other guy. So you settle for the one till you get the other. Peggy's using Mr. Wrong while she's waiting for Mr. Right. Well, while I may not totally agree that doing wrong makes things right, she does say that all is fair in love and war. Hmmm... This is one of those songs that I play when I travel up and down the road; I'll hit repeat and let it roll. You won't be surprised when I say that I love this song - I really do!
I’m getting what I want
I’m just not getting it where I want it from
I’m getting what I want
I’m just not getting it where I want it from
I’m in love with a man
But that man loves somebody else
But try to understand a woman must look out for herself
My body’s here with you but my mind is out there somewhere with him
But you know what they say
In love and war, all is fair
I don’t misuse you, I don’t even try
If I were you I would tell me goodbye
You’re a better lover baby than he’ll ever be
And boy you’re so fine
There must be something wrong with me
You do all the freaky things I wish that he could do
I must be insane loving him when I got you
You love me, I love him for myself
He loves her, she’s probably loving someone else
Still, I’m getting what I want
I’m just not getting it where I want I from
I’m getting what I want
I’m just not getting it where I want it from
If I were you I would tell me goodbye!
Enjoy!
