Ms. Jody - "Booty Strut"

What a great line dance song!! Ms. Jody is one of my favorite artists and with "Booty Strut," she'll make you want to get up and move!! She says that when she goes to the club she always looks her best, showing off her legs and her booty in a skintight dress.  Well alright now!!

The line of the song: I do more with this booty than a monkey with a coconut!! 😳😃

Strut it to the left, strut it to the right, I strut it to the front, back it up and work it all night!

Enjoy!

T.J. Hooker-Taylor - 12th Annual Southern Soul Celebration, Ladysmith, Virginia - Part 3

It was an honor interviewing T.J. Hooker-Taylor at the 12th Annual Southern Soul Blues Celebration in Ladysmith, Virginia.  T.J. is son of the legendary Johnnie Taylor.  He performs all over the country, is a great writer, and sings a lot of his father’s music.

T.J. is a very down-to-earth brother and it was a joy to spend some time with him.  He didn’t try to rush our talk and he wanted to make sure that I had the time to ask everything I wanted.  He’s funny with a wonderful sense of humor and has a great personality.

I learned a lot of interesting things about T.J. and I started with the first commonly-asked question that many artists are asked – how did he get his start in the music industry?  He said that he started singing in the church with his cousins, The Young Golden Voices, in Kansas City, Missouri.  He kept singing through the years and later opened for Johnnie Taylor.  I asked what is his most favorite song to sing and he immediately said that it is his father’s “Soul Heaven;” it has the Taylor groove and he always loves to perform this hit.

I wondered what T.J. did before he became famous and he said that he worked on the grounds at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.  Ironically, this is also the cemetery where his father is buried.

I was also curious as to the new southern soul artists that he liked and he said that he really liked L. J. Echols and J-Wonn because they both are great musicians.

I asked T.J. what he does in his spare time and here are five things I’ll bet you didn’t know he likes to do:
1     1.  Fish
2     2.  Roller skate
3     3.  Cook
4     4.  Paint
5     5.  Spend time with his girls

T. J. currently lives in Kansas City.  He is a devoted father and takes care of all five of his children.  He continues to record new music and has a new CD titled “Don’t Do It For The Money.”

T.J. Hooker-Taylor proudly said that he will be attending the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame celebration on October 28 in Little Rock and that he will be accepting an award for his father.  I think that is awesome and I really wish I could be there for that.  His goal is to continue the legacy of his father and spread his love of music to the world.  He wants to keep recording and producing good music.  I believe his father, Johnnie Taylor, is smiling down on his son and is pleased with his work.

Here is a picture of my sister, Brenda, and T.J. and then a picture of me with him in Ladysmith!
Here are a few pictures during his performance.

Listen to "Don't Do It For The Money."

Looking forward to more music from him and to see him perform again. Thank you T.J. Hooker-Taylor for a great interview and a wonderful show!!

Walt Love - "The Rabbit Got Da' Gun"

Walt says it's hunting season all over the USA and you just may be the one who's being hunted. He says that he used to cheat on his woman and acted like he didn't care.  When he finally decided to straighten up, she was having a hot affair and by then it was too late. Fellas, there's a message in the story.

It ain't no fun when the rabbit's got the gun; it ain't no fun when you lose the one you love.
Amen!

Bookie Tee - Mr. Anything Goes WQLS 90.5 FM

One of the best things in the world is when your favorite local radio station streams online.  I remember the days when the only way I could hear southern soul/the blues was to travel down south.  Thank you Lord for the internet!!!

The radio station in my home town of Camden, Alabama, is WQLS 90.5 FM and the best dee jay is Bookie Tee!  ‘Mr. Anything Goes' plays everything I want to hear and has a crazy-cool personality!  I listen to him every single afternoon and he’s on the air from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.  If you’re in Wilcox County and surrounding areas, turn your dial to 90.5 FM.  Or, you can do like I do when I’m not in Camden and listen online via TuneIn at https://tunein.com/radio/the-Q-905-s152724/.  I love his show! 💕

I’ll be sitting down soon with Bookie Tee so stay tuned for what promises to be a great interview!!

Big G: 12th Annual Southern Soul Blues Celebration Ladysmith, VA - Part 2

I saw Big G at the 12th Annual Southern Soul Blues Celebration in Ladysmith, Virginia and, as always, he put on a great show.   He's very popular in the Virginia region and is most definitely loved by the crowd.  Big G has a unique sound.  To me, you can hear a little country-western tinge to his music which is mixed with the blues. This ends up being a beautiful sound and I love his music.
Here are a few pictures from the event:

His bio as taken from cdbaby.com:
Big G was born in Charlotte County Virginia. He grew up singing and playing the lead and bass guitar in church. He grew up listening to all types of music but Southern Soul Music made him what he is today. Influenced by such artists as Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge, Tyrone Davis, Roy C, he started singing old school R&B back in the 1970’s.

Big G’s proudest moments were being able to share the stage with such artists as: Bobby Blue Bland, Marvin Sease, Millie Jackson, Shirley Brown, Mel Waiters, Roy C and Clarence Carter.

One of God’s precious gifts, given to Big G is being able to write and create his music. Stone River Records is proud to be a part of Big G’s journey as he continues to grow in the music industry and looks forward to what is yet to come.

Check out Big G's website: https://www.biggofsouthernsoul.com.

In Ladysmith, he sang "Tell Me Can You Feel It" and it is absolutely wonderful!!  I had to buy the CD. 😀 Actually, I bought a couple of his CDs...

Here are a couple of other songs by Big G:

Check out my post from August 9, 2017 which features my most favorite Big G song, Darkest Hour: http://southernsoulparadise.blogspot.com/2017/08/big-g-darkest-hour.html.

Looking forward to seeing this awesome performer again!!

J-Wonn - "2 Ways"

You only got two ways to do it - either you leave him or I'm gonna put you out!  Poor J-Wonn.  In "2 Ways," he tells us a sad story about infidelity.  He said that he came home early from work one day and found his woman in their bedroom with another man!  I think he knew something was up but he didn't want to listen to his mama when she saw the girl in the casino, or his grandma who saw her in the bingo hall, or his cousins who saw her at the stoplight.  What really made him snap was when he caught her in their bedroom. (I guess that would do it!) You know he's hurt because he really loves this girl.  So, either she has to leave her sidepiece or get put out. What would you do?

J-Wonn is an awesome young southern soul singing brother! "2 Ways" is taken from his "The Legacy Begins" CD.

12th Annual Southern Soul Blues Celebration Ladysmith, VA - Part 1

Ladysmith is a community right off I-95 in Caroline County, Virginia. The ruralness (I think I just made up that word lol) of it reminds me so much of Alabama so I always feel right at home when I’m there.  This is the second time that I've attended the Southern Soul Blues Celebration and my sister, Brenda, and I had a fabulous time!! It was held on August 26 and this event was like one huge party.  It was a mostly 40-and-over crowd which I love because no one was arguing, fussing, or fighting and everybody was there to have a good time.

The park was located in a pretty setting under tall, country pine trees. The temps were perfect that day – not too hot or too chilly – and the sun was shining and the sky was blue.  Everyone had their lawn chairs and there were tons of coolers with food and lovely liquid refreshments.  You could dance on the ‘floor’ in front of the stage or dance right at your seat; it was that kind of party.  And, I met some really nice people.  The great music and wonderful atmosphere made this a pretty cool day.

We started the day by meeting Queen, the promoter, with her beautiful smile.  She always makes me feel welcome here and is responsible for a great show. I love her!
And then we caught up with the most handsome and hardest working man in the DMV, Dr. Nick!  Dr. Nick was one of the two MCs and he is known for making sure that everyone has a good time. Here is a pic of him with my sister, Brenda - I don't know how I missed out on taking one with him!!!
The show had a great lineup and the acts scheduled to perform were:

Southern Bluez
Jesi Terrell
T.J. Hooker Taylor
Big G
Omar Cunningham

Here are a couple of pictures of the beautiful Jesi Terrell who sang "Love Mechanic" and many other hits!

They were all awesome and each gave a great performance!  Take a look at parts 2 and 3 of this series for my review of Big G’s part of the show and my interesting interview with T.J. Hooker Taylor!
