Ms. Jody - "Take Me"

"Take Me" is the reason I love southern soul so!  This song is taken from Ms. Jody's Keepin' It Real CD and it is being played a lot in south/west central Alabama.  I actually loved this song the very first time I heard it and I never get tired of listening to it.  Ms. Jody said that if there's anybody lonely, she is available - please take her.  Ahh, if it were only that easy!  (smile)  In this song, the lyrics are good, the music is great, and her voice is right on - it's amazing!  This song is just about perfect!

Is anybody lonely, please take me

I’ve been lonely enough for a long long time
And the man that I had ya’ll, well he wasn’t even mine
Now it’s in his kiss, just the way the man feels
He used to kiss me and take away all my ills
But now when he kisses me
He just gives me a smack
And that let’s me know
That he might not come back

Is anybody lonely, lonely
Please take me
Is anybody lonely, lonely
Please take me

I’m so tired waking up all by myself
When I’d rather be lying? all close to someone else
But I can see that he loves me, all in his eyes
And I don’t have to worry about him
Telling me no lies
Someone that will say baby, I love you
And I don’t have to hear, oh yeah, I love you, too

Is anybody lonely
Please take me

When I’m feeling down and out
I want someone that understands
And take me by my hand
And say baby I'm your man

Is anybody lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely
Please take me
Is anybody lonely out there tonight
Please take me

See I’m at that age in life I just want to relax and have a good time
When I find a special someone I want to make him all mine

Enjoy!

J. Blackfoot - "I'm Just A Fool"

What a beautiful voice - we are truly missing J. Blackfoot.  This is a song he did with Lenny Williams and it is an amazing ballad.  I'm just a fool in love with you - this song is simply beautiful.  If you get a chance, check out the version of this song that J. remade with his nephew, Sir Charles Jones.  I'm usually not big on remakes but this one is even better than the original!

Awesome music!

Marvin Sease - "Do You Qualify?"

You know, sometimes you just have to pull out the good stuff.  Here's a wonderful Marvin Sease song that is simple but amazing.  I often tell people that Marvin was so versatile and there was much more to him than Candy Licker.  If you like Marvin's music, you'll like this.

I’m not worried about what they want
I’m not looking for a one night stand
I’m looking for a woman who needs a man
And I’m not looking for a bump and grind
If you do right, girl I’ll make you mine

Chorus
I need a woman and I’m looking at you girl, let me ask you honey,
Do you qualify?

I need somebody to be in my life
And one day be my wife
I need somebody to hold my hand
And makes me feel like I’m her man

Chorus

If you never had a brand new car, I don’t mind buying you one
And if you never had a diamond ring, I don’t mind buying you one
And if you’re tired of wearing the same old clothes
I don’t mind buying you some

I’ve just got one question, I just want to ask you
Do you qualify?

Stephanie McDee - "Pony Slide"

Giddy up, giddy up girls, yeehaw, come on, let's go!  I hear this song every Saturday on Mobile's All Blues Saturday - WDLT.  I like the melody a lot and the song grows on you.  However, I call this grown folks music and I probably wouldn't play it around my kids - I wouldn't want to answer any questions they may have. (smile)  Here's the first verse:

Saddle up! Throw it to the left, now throw it to the right
Sling it to the front, now back it up how you like
Take it down to the floor
How low can you go, make him holler for more
Make that tootsie roll
Enjoy!

Johnnie Taylor - "I Love You Lady"

It's been a few weeks since my last JT post and I needed a Johnnie Taylor fix tonight.  "I Love You Lady" hits the spot.  He says that after all the things they've been through, he wonders how lucky one man can be.  I love this man!

Sitting here reminiscing about how good you’ve been to me
And all other things we’ve been through together
Sometime I wonder how lucky can one man be
To have a love like yours
That gets better and better and better

Chorus
That’s why I love you lady
I love the way, the way you’ve been loving me
I love you lady
I love the way, the way you’ve been loving me
Don’t you ever ever take your love away

Sometime I sit up in the midnight hour
I watch you while you’re sleeping
Reach over and run my fingers gently through your hair
I thank God for this angel
Trusting me and ......... (I'm sorry, I couldn't get this right)
Your love is so special, girl
And no one could ever compare

Chorus
Enjoy!

Frank Mendenhall - "All Blues Saturday"

The more I hear Frank Mendenhall's music, the more I love it.  He has a really unique sound and he's another southern soul artist that left here way too soon.  He left behind some fantastic music.  I recently found out that he was from Camden, in the Possum Bend area, and I wish I had had a chance to meet him. "All Blues Saturday" is a great southern soul song that is all about listening to the blues and having a good time.  Like so many of us, he waited all week long to get to the weekend - I know what he means!!

They say this is the place to go if you want to party
They say this is the place to be if you want a good time
They say that the dee jays sho’ know how to party on a Saturday
I just come to party, shake my rump all night long
I’ve been waiting all week long to get to the weekend
For the all blues Saturday
I just want to listen to the blues
Then I want to dance all day

Fish fry in the back yard, barbecue on the grill
It’s an all blues Saturday, I got my cooler full
Please let the dee jays keep on playing those blues all day
I just want to party, it’s an all blues Saturday

I’ve been waiting all week long to get to the weekend
For the all blues Saturday
I just want to listen to the blues
And then I want to dance all day

I’ve been waiting all week long to get to the weekend
For the all blues Saturday
I just want to listen to the blues
And I want to dance all day

Everybody out there in the night club
All out there in the roads (?)
Even out there that are working all day long
Know they want to party too
They’ve been waiting all week long to get to the weekend
For the all blues Saturday
They just want to hear the dee jay play the blues all day

Note:  The song stops around the 3:45 mark.

J. Blackfoot

The world paused for a second when J. Blackfoot transitioned to the other side. I had just found out that he had been sick, and still performing, and it hurt my heart to hear that he passed. J. Blackfoot was one of those artists I grew up listening to and kept following year after year. He was awesome with the Soul Children and they had tons of hits. I remember Heresay, The Sweeter He Is, I’ll Understand, I’ll Be The Other Woman, Don’t Take My Kindness For Weakness, Love Makes It Right, and more. And for when he went solo, there’s the classic Taxi, Just One Lifetime, Two Different People, In My Bedroom, Your Man Is Home Tonight, Same Time Same Place, I'm Just A Fool, and I could keep going on and on. J. Blackfoot’s voice was unforgettable and his voice was so amazing. I listened to him as a teenager and also through my entire adult life. The music he left behind is timeless and will live forever through our stereos, iPods, radios, youtube/internet sites, etc. I’m so thankful for all he gave us.

See my posts about J. Blackfoot dated 8/14/2011, 9/5/2011, and 11/13/2011.

Tazz Calhoun - "Stroke It Easy"

I love a good southern soul sounding song and this is it!  Stroke It Easy is one of those songs I don't play around my kids (yes, my grown kids) but I LOVE it.  It's a great dance song.  Here are the first few lines but you'll have to listen to the song to get the rest!

An arm around my shoulders
The other one around my waist
Keep it moving boy, grooving at a steady pace
Like the waves of the ocean you move from side to side
You’ve got the moves boy to keep me satisfied
So stroke it easy, I said easy
I like the way you do it boy when you stroke it easy

Take your time with it boy!

Vick Allen - "If They Can Beat Me Rockin' (They Can Have My Chair)"

"If They Can Beat Me Rockin', They Can Have My Chair" sounds like one of those cryptic phrases your grandmother or your uncle said but you just didn't understand until you got older.  You know what I mean?  (smile)  Vick says that he's good at what he does and nobody can beat him.  There just aren't too many men that can do what he does.  Go on with your bad self!

Vick Allen has an unmistakable voice and I enjoy his music.  My all-time favorite though is "I'm Hooked" - she's got me hooked, like she done put a root on me! I love that song and I'll post it as soon as someone puts it on youtube.  In the meantime, listen to the words and the message of "If They Can Beat Me Rockin'!"

I heard about my lady, been sneakin around
I heard it in the barbershop and all over town
So I asked her, is it any truth to it
She said “If you didn’t catch me, then I didn’t do it”
I know you’re cheatin but they can’t do me like me
When it comes to making love I know how to please
You try to be a little player but I don’t care
Cause if they can beat me rockin, they can have my chair

If they can beat me rockin, they can have my chair
Say ain’t too many men that can do what I do out there
I like to take it slow, slow and easy
I’m good at what I do and nobody can beat me

Now he may be younger, I don’t doubt it
But the old man, girl I still got it
I can work it in the middle
Stroke it with a motion
I can bring that fire when I get the notion
So go on and do you, baby that’s fine
Cause when you leave there’s two more in line
I ain’t trying to brag, no, but I do what I do
I can do for someone else what I did for you

Now you may think you’re the slickest thing in town
But I done caught you messing around
I don’t want to hear nothing cause I heard it all before
Cause I been there, done that a long long time ago

I knew when you started because something about you changed
Started talking under your breath and stopped wearing your ring
But now you can go on because you and I are through
I know he can’t do the things I did for you

Enjoy!

Lacee - "I Ran A Good Man Away"

Like Tyrone Davis, we have all been in a situation where we have wished that we could turn back the hands of time!  I know I have! Lacee said she knows she made a mistake and ran a good man away.  Let me tell you that a good man is hard to find!  If you have one, treat him right and he'll be good to you.

I want to tell ya’ll how I ran a good man away
I meant this guy who showed me things, things I’ve never seen
The man was so good to me, he treated me just like a queen
This man was so good to me, kind as could be
He never said a mumbling word, just took in me and my family

I ran a good man away, I know I made a mistake.
I ran a good man away, he aint’coming home to stay

You see, I came with a lot of baggage from my past
I had been with a few other guys who mistreated me so bad
But there was one other guy, just stayed in my head
He really didn’t mean me no good, he was just good in bed
So here it was ladies, lying to my man at home
Going behind his back to be with the man that
I never did me wrong (not sure of this line)

One day he pulled up in his car, saw me with the other guy
He said he had followed me for quite some time
And he drove away with tears in his eyes

Latimore - "Around The World"

What a great black-lights-in-the-basement song!  I know you remember Latimore from "Let's Straighten It Out."  Have you ever heard him perform that live?  Wow, he is something else.  He doesn't mind letting you know that just because his hair is gray, he still has it - and he certainly does!  "My Give A Damn Gave Out" (see my post dated August 20, 2011) was a great comeback hit for him and "Around The World" is fantastic.  In the chorus, he said that she took him around the world without leaving the room!  Woohooo!

He starts the first verse by saying that he was respectful, she was so polite, and that making love to her wasn’t on his mind tonight.  Here's the second verse:
She massaged my shoulders and rubbed my back
She said here’s a little something to help you relax
She gave me a taste of that gin and juice
Then that woman turned me every way but loose

I have always loved Latimore.  You'll
enjoy this great slow dance song.

Denise LaSalle - "Going Through Changes"

How can you deny that Denise LaSalle is the Queen of Soul when you listen to her music?  She is one of my favorite female southern soul singers.  She's been putting out great music for years and one of her songs that I wanted to post was "Home Wrecker" but I couldn't find it on youtube.  I did, however, find "Going Through Changes" which I love.  (I like her 'shoop.') Listen to the intro - it's definitely gospel and makes you feel as if you're in church!  In this story, her man is just so tired of being mistreated and putting up with all the mess he's been dealing with.  With tears in his eye, the last words he said before he walked out the door was that he's tired of going through changes with her.  He's tired of fussing and fighting and just can't take it anymore.  Ladies, listen to these words.  If you've got a good man like this one, treat him right.  Trust me, if you don't, someone else surely will.

Chorus
I’m tired of going through changes with you
I’m tired of going through changes with you

Every time I take you out you embarrass me so
Accusing me of every woman I know
And when we get home baby I have to fight all night long
I don’t know when I’m doing right or when I’m doing wrong

Lately baby when I go out alone
I get so depressed now baby I don’t even want to come home
Your favorite greeting for me when I walk through the door
I know you’ve been out running around with your Ms. So and So

I heard you baby, let’s sit down and talk it out
Try to find out baby what our love is all about
But every time we talk we wind up in a shouting match
You jump in bed, you cover your head, and you turn your back

I tried to be a good man, give you most of my time
I gave you my money, took care of your kids
And they ain’t even mine
I really do love you baby, but I just can’t take no more
So before we destroy each other, I’d rather pack my bags and go

Don't throw a good man away!

Lamorris Williams - "Impala"

“Impala” has taken the southern soul world by storm and it is still going strong. I fell in love with Larmorris William’s “Body Roll” about a year ago (I’m still waiting for it to be posted on youtube) and I‘ve heard a few other songs by him that I really like.  I like “Impala” but it is one of those songs that I wouldn’t want my kids to listen to or sing.  On the other hand, it's loved by people all over the country and I think that the melody and slow tempo are pretty addictive.

The song starts with Lamorris and one of his friends as they were riding back from a show. They decided to stop by a cafe, join the fun, and have a drink. They made their way to the bar and ordered two shots of Remy. Out of about 50 women there, he saw this one girl who was wearing a sexy red dress, dancing all by herself, and slow rolling to a song. I think it was love at first sight, or maybe lust, but the attraction was strong and this is what she says to him:

We can do it in your spot
Or we can do it in the parking lot
We can do it in the shower
Baby let’s go for hours
Said I’m feeling your style
Let’s slow grind for a little while
You can make me holler in the back of my impala

I won’t write all of the words but you can probably figure out the rest of the story. Check out the words and listen to this very popular song!

Enjoy!

The Soul Children - "I'll Be The Other Woman"

“I’ll Be The Other Woman” is a truly beautiful but sad song. The Soul Children were one of those southern soul groups that successfully crossed over into R&B. J. Blackfoot (Taxi and other songs) was the lead male singer and they had many hits such as Hearsay, The Sweeter He Is, I’ll Understand, Don’t Take My Kindness for Weakness, Love Makes It Right, and so much more. They were an awesome group and made beautiful music. “I’ll Be The Other Woman” is about the girl messing around with the married guy. She knows she’s not first in his life and doesn't seem to mind that he's married, as long as he doesn’t mess around with anyone else. Well, there’s a problem with that picture but I’ll save that for another day! I absolutely adore this song - here are ALL of the words.

I'll be the other woman
All your life
Just as long as I am the only one
Other than your wife
Your wife, how would she feel
If she caught us together
The same way I would feel
If I caught you with another

Home I know comes first
And second to that I'll be
When you're not there with her
I want you right here with me

Chorus
I'll be the other woman
Just as long as I know
I'm the only other woman
You make love to

I'll be the other woman
But I've got to know
I'm the only other woman
You make love to

The neighbors are whispering
Saying you don't care
If you cheat on your wife for me
You'll cheat on me for someone else

I'll be your part-time love
But that's as far as I'll go
To be your part-time fool
Would be stooping a little too low

Loving a married man
This I really don't mind
But a married Casanova
Is a little out of my line

Chorus

I'll open doors for you baby
Long as I know
I'm the only other woman
You make love to

I'll be your part-time love
I've got to know
I'm the only other woman
You make love to
I love The Soul Children - enjoy!

Jesse Graham - "Mr. Mailman"

I turn the volume up every time I hear this song. I absolutely adore the intro music.  Poor Jesse, he's been working all day and gets the mail when he gets home.  After reading a letter from his girl, he tells the mailman that it's not his mail...it's a Dear John letter and can he please send it back.  I just think it's wrong to chicken out and send a man a Dear John letter telling him that you're sorry it ended this way.  Come on ladies, unless there's abuse involved, this ought to be a face-to-face discussion.  The mailman, all he can do is apologize and say Jesse, I'm sorry.  But this letter has your name on it and this is your address.

I absolutely love the melody, lyrics, and everything about this song.  Here's the chorus:

Mr. Mailman, you brought the wrong mail
Mr. Mailman, now I know this can’t be my mail
Good music!

Sir Charles Jones - "Friday"

There's something about hearing this song on a Friday - makes you want to go out and get your groove on!  Sir Charles Jones says this song is dedicated to all of us who work 9 to 5 - and you know how Friday feels!  You're going to like this easy going song by Sir Charles Jones.  It makes you feel good and also makes you want to get out and party.  His music is one of the reasons I love southern soul so much.  Note that he mentions doing the electric slide to Johnnie Taylor's "Slide On" and asks the dee jay to play "Motel Lover" by Marvin Sease.  Here are the first and last verses of this great song.

This one is dedicated for all the workers that work 9 to 5
Do you want to party
Hey, it’s Friday, let’s party tonight
It’s Friday, and I’m gonna party and get my groove on
It’s Friday, and I’m gonna party till the break of dawn

I did my work this week
And baby I just got paid
Wanna go buy me a fresh pair of gators
With some of this money that I made
Mel Waiters on the radio
Singing about the whiskey
I think I’ll go by the store
To get me a bottle so I can be ready
To get my groove on the dance floor

Mr. Dee Jay, can you play some Marvin Sease
Can you play “Motel Lover”
So I can ask this lady to please take me
I’ve been at work all week and I deserve
To come out and have a good time
I’ve been spending my money on everybody else
Tonight I’m gonna to spend every dime
Cause it’s Friday!
It's Friday and I'm gonna party and get my groove on!
Enjoy!!

Johnnie Taylor - "Last Two Dollars"

I can put on a Johnny Taylor CD, start listening to track 1, and let the entire CD play from beginning to end - and then repeat.  I haven't written about JT in awhile and I think I'm going through withdrawal!  "Last Two Dollars" was on his "Good Love" CD and every single song is great. In this song, Johnnie Taylor tells a story about a lady in the casino who wants to borrow two dollars.  Looks like she's lost just about everything and says that she's going to spend one of those dollars on bus fair (she's got to get home) and the other on the jukebox (gotta have her down home music - I can relate!).  Another awesome record by Johnnie Taylor!

A lady at the casino
She lost all her money
She said don’t feel sorry for me
Don’t feel sorry, honey
But if you want to do a lady a favor
Here’s what I want you to do
Just loan me two dollars
Until the next time I see you

But these last two dollars
I’m not gonna lose
These last two dollars
I’m not gonna lose
One’s going for my bus fair
The other one’s for the jukebox
To hear me some blues
I’ve got to hear me some blues

Said I wouldn’t be over here
If my man had been treating me right
I came here to try to catch him here
Cause he’s been sneakin around every night
But I caught up over here
Got caught up in this scene
And I put all of my money
In that doggone gambling machine

Chorus
What an amazing man!
Miss you JT!

Sir Charles Jones - "Just Like Fire"

Sir Charles Jones has an unmistakable, timeless, silky smooth sound.  His ballads are so pretty and his up tempo songs are really good.  He has quite a few popular songs out such as "Take Care of Momma,"  "It's Friday," "Just Can't Let Go," and so much more.  Did you know that J. Blackfoot (Taxi) is his uncle?  Talent definitely runs in the family.  "Just Like Fire," to me, is one of those cool/laid back songs where he tells his girl that he's hooked on her and she drives him crazy.  He can't explain and he can't maintain.  Sounds like the man's in love!

Chorus
Just like fire burning in me girl
Just like fire
Just like fire burning in me girl
Just like fire

The way you whipped that thing girl
Drives me so crazy
The way you move it, ooh please don’t lose it
There can never be another, no no baby,
The way you love me sometimes girl I can’t explain
Cause I’m hooked on you my girl I can’t maintain

Chorus

Sometimes I start to shaking
And I call out your name
I say baby, please take it easy
Cause you know how to please me
The way you love me girl sometimes I can’t explain
Cause I ‘m hooked on you sometimes I can’t maintain

Just like fire
Running over me
Just like fire
Baby, can’t you see what you do to me
Just like fire burning in me
Just like fire
Can’t explain it, can’t maintain it
Hooked on you, don't know what to do.
Just like fire!
Enjoy!

Peggy Scott Adams - "Mr. Right or Mr. Wrong"

Peggy Scott Adams tells a story like no one else!  We have a case where a woman calls Mr. Jody because she's lonely and needs some help.  Her old man isn't giving her what she needs and even though Jody has other women lined up, he'll be more than happy to help her.  If you listen to the words of the chorus, she hits the nail on the head - if her man doesn't want her, another man will.  I love Peggy Scott Adams and I love this song.  Check out the words and sing along with her!

When I’m in the mood, my old man is not
I toss and turn, yearn and burn
Can’t sleep when I’m hot
Every time I try to turn him on
He turns his back and says leave me alone

Chorus
If Mr. Right won’t get it
I’ll betcha Mr. Wrong will be more than glad to hit it
If Mr. Right has no desire
I’m gonna let Mr. Wrong set this thing on fire

I want to be a do-right woman
But my patience is shonuff running out
You see, I’ve got a feeling that he’s out there getting
What he’s making me stay at home and doing without

Feels like my body is about to explode
I need relief from this mother lode, yes I do ya’ll
When a woman’s needs are being denied at home
She’s got to go somewhere else and try to get it on

Oh well, what is a girl to do
When she needs to be used and she’s being refused
Here’s what I’m telling you
A girlfriend of mine had to call on Jody
Cause her old man never wants to get it on
Guess what, she found out what she got from Jody
Was better than anything she ever got at home

Fellas, you're in trouble if your woman has to
go in search of Jody!  And when she finds out
that he's giving her more than what
she's getting at home, it just might be too late!
Enjoy!

Donnie Ray - "A Letter To My Baby"

This is easily an in-the-club or a house party song.  It is true southern soul with a beautiful melody and good lyrics.  Donnie Ray has an outstanding voice and this man can sing; I could listen to him all day long.  He starts this song by saying that he sat down and wrote a letter to his baby.  Now I don't know about you, but a man earns big points if he writes a letter to me!!!  Ladies, you know what I mean.  Anyway, this is a song about the letter he writes - I like when he says that as soon as he gets there, this is what he wants you to do, woman, take me in your arms and rock me baby.  Oh yes!

I wrote a letter to my sweet baby
And this is how, this is how it began
It says: I’m sorry baby, if I’ve done you wrong
And I’m sorry baby, if I had to leave you all alone
You see there comes a time in everyone’s life
When you’ve got to be strong and make a sacrifice
But you know I love you until the end of time
So I’m sitting right here with thoughts of you on my mind

So as soon as I get there honey, here is what I want you to do
Woman, take me in your arms and rock me baby
Woman, take me in your arms and rock me baby
That’s what I want you to do girl
Are we gonna make love like we never made love before
I’m gonna do all the things girl I’ve never done before
I’m gonna kiss you right here and there
And when the time comes, honey, I’m gonna kiss you everywhere
Oh let me kiss you right there
Please baby say I can, girl
Oh as soon as I get there honey, I’m gonna make love to you baby
Oh girl, that’s what I wanna do baby
Woman, take me in your arms and rock me baby

He said he's on his way home to me!
Good music!!

Andre Lee - "One Night Stand"

She told me that I couldn't be her man and that all she was looking for was a one night stand.  Well....I guess sometimes that's all you want - forget a relationship and just take care of thangs.  I'm a romantic at heart and I'd rather go for at least friendship but I can't knock anyone who just wants to hit it and quit it.  I like Andre Lee's voice, it's smooth and sexy, the kind you'd like to hear in ballads.  Here are a few lines from "One Night Stand."

I met this girl the other night
She had a sexy body she sure was tight
She was the kind of girl that you’d like to get to know
So I asked that girl if she’d like to dance
And then she jumped right up, she took me by my hand
And we went out on the dance floor she shook that thing all along
I told that girl I’d like to take her home
And maybe later we can get it on
She told me that I couldn’t be her man
She said all she wanted to do tonight was to have a one night stand

All she wanted to do is have a one night stand
That girl said she didn’t need no man
Just a one night stand
That's all she wanted to do
She told me that I couldn’t be her man
She said all she’s looking for tonight is a one night stand

P.S. The song stops around 4:30 mark, the rest is empty space.
You will like "One Night Stand," it's a great house
party song - enjoy!

Klass Band Brotherhood - "Sugaa Shack"

This is one of the hottest songs in south/central Alabama!  It's about a guy who loses his girl and wants her back.  He's gotta go back to the sugar shack.  The artist on this song is the Klass Band Brotherhood and I love them!  I had never heard of them before this song but you should check out their website:  http://klassbandbrotherhood.com/fr_bandbio.cfm.  The group was formerly known as Le Klass but they changed their name because they wanted to remember all of the members they used to have and the brotherhood they shared in this journey of music.  I think that's awesome and I have a feeling we'll be hearing a whole lot more from them.  They have a unique sound and they represent southern soul well.

I wanna go back to the sugaa shack!
Enjoy!!!

Floyd Taylor - "I'm Bout It Bout It"

Floyd Taylor is a son of the legendary Johnnie Taylor and you can't ignore the fact that he sounds so much like his Dad.  "I'm Bout It Bout" It is from his "All Of Me" album and it has a catchy beat.  This song is being played heavily in the south and is well known by everyone.  That's because he's bout it bout it!!! The song below is a mix of the original and a remix by Simeo.  It's not my preferred version but I can't find the original - here are some of the words.

Girl if you love me, you’re safe from harm
Cause I’m bout it bout it
And when you’re ready for love
I’m always there, I’m willing and able
Name what you want me to do
Girl I discovered that you were rare
There’s no other like you
That’s why I put it down
So I can keep you around
Girl, let’s get this party started
You know what to do
I’ve been sippin on Bacardi making love to you

I’m bout it bout it
No doubt about it
I'm bout it bout it

Can I pop my collar now?

Quinn Golden - "Dance Party"

I love this song by the late, great Quinn Golden.  It's something you want to hear when you go to the club, go to a house party, or while you're sitting at home listening to good music.  He had a smooth voice and both the melody and lyrics are great.  The man wants to take his lady out for dancing and to have a good time - what more could you want?

The party’s started, the dance floor is packed
Everybody in the club ain’t holding nothing back
I want to dance with you with all those sexy moves, baby

Cause it’s a dance party, dance party tonight

The dee jay‘s playing our favorite song
I want to dance with you baby, all night long
We’ll have a drink or two
And cut loose on the dance floor tonight

Chorus
Cause at the dance party, dance party tonight
Cause at the dance party, dance party tonight

Everybody’s here, feeling fine
Just like you and me, ain’t got a worry on their mind
Good good drinks and music
Got everybody in the place feeling alright

When the dee jay plays something soft and slow
That’s when I want to hold you close
You can let your hair down, get real loose
This is party time you do what you want to do

All week long, I’ve been waiting for this night with you
And I’m gonna do some steps, old and new
We’re just getting started, we’re going to keep on dancing till the morning light

I wanna hold you close and squeeze you tight and dance with you
I wanna hold you close and squeeze you tight and dance around with you
Enjoy!

Frank Lucas - "My Singing Ding-A-Ling"

Have you ever heard a song where you really like the melody but you just don't like the lyrics?  That's how I feel about My Singing Ding-A-Ling.  When you hear this by Frank Lucas, you'll love the music of Betty Wright's "Tonight Is The Night" and the song will actually grow on you; it has a catchy beat.  But when you take the time and actually listen to the lyrics, it's a different story.  I hear this song just about every weekend on one of the radio stations and it's one of those songs that I would really love if the words were different.  I dislike the lyrics so much that I'm not even going to repeat them - they're just a little too x-rated for me.  But I can't get this song out of my head. (smile)

Listen and let me know what you think.

Glenn Jones - "Baby Come Home"

I am a sucker for any song where a man does some serious begging.  That's for real!  Glenn Jones said that he wants her back and he needs her back, so baby please come home!!  Glenn is a crossover R&B/southern soul artist and I first heard of him with his hits, "Here I Go Again" and "Show Me."  Mainstream radio didn't play "Baby Come Home" but the southern soul stations picked it up and I am so glad they did.  In this song, he lost his girl but he's trying like crazy to get her back.  Sit back and enjoy.

Guess she’s out of my life
But I can’t get her out of my mind
There’s no use in trying, just a waste of time
So that I go out in the streets
And to all of the strangers I meet
When they smile at me
I can’t help but think of how it used to be

Chorus
But when the lights are down
And you‘re not around
I want you back, I need you back
So baby come home
Where your heart belongs to me
Home is where you know you have a family
So baby come home
Don’t waste no more precious time
One more night without you I might lose my mind

Can’t we both just sit down together, baby
And try to work things out
You know there’s no need for us to scream and shout
I’ll give you my shoulder to lay your head
I’ll even bring you breakfast in bed
Then will you forget the foolish things I said

Chorus

There’s no use in crying because
That won’t bring your loving arms back to me again
Cause each day a part of me is dying
I want you back, I need you back
So baby come home
Where your heart belongs to me
Home is where you know you have a family
Will you come home
One more night without you I might lose my mind

One more night without you I might
lose my mind!!!

Johnnie Taylor - "Sending You A Kiss"

I'm imagining that I'm on a trip or away from home (or even at work) and talking to my man on the phone.  He's telling me that he loves me and that he's sending me a kiss; I can put it where I want it. Oh man, oh man, oh man.  What a beautiful, makes-you-feel-good love song.  You know that I adore Johnnie Taylor and he is one of the greatest performers of all time.  Please take a few minutes to hear him sing this - it's worth listening to over and over again.

I know that it’s hard on you
Trying to face it all alone
Sometimes you feel you just can’t do it
But don’t let it get the best of you
I know that you’re strong
But just to help you get through it I’m…

Chorus
I’m sending you a kiss
Put it where you want it baby
I hope it makes your day a little brighter
And your load a little bit lighter
I’m giving you this any time you need it baby
Because on me you can depend and you’ll always have a friend

Girl, sit down and let me rub your back baby
Ease the tension and the pressure building up inside of you
There won’t be no strings attached
Cause it gives me so much pleasure
Baby, trying to please you

Chorus (2x)
I know that it’s hard on you
But girl I understand what it is that you’re going through

Sending you a kiss, put it where you want it baby
Anywhere you want it, girl, I've got to say it one more time
I'm sending you a kiss, any time you need it baby
Put it where you want it baby
I want you to have it girl
Any time and any place, sending you a kiss
You can put it right here, put it where you want it sugar
Any time you need it baby, any time you need my love baby
Sending you a kiss, baby, put it where you want it sugar
Anytime you need it baby, any time you need my love, baby

Sending you a kiss so you'll have it any time you need it!  Awesome.

Jeff Floyd - "You Had It All"

If you want to dance, this is it!  "You Had It All" is a great song with a story we can all relate to.  This guy was one of those good men who worked two jobs, gave his all, and did his woman right.  I'm sure she thought the grass was greener on the other side and left this wonderful man, only to find out things aren't always better over there.  She wanted him back and he said no way.  Can you blame him?  He had done everything and she threw it all away.  You know someone is always waiting for the girlfriend to mess up and I'll bet it didn't take long for him to find someone who appreciates him.  Not only does "You Had It All" have an awesome dance beat, but Jeff Floyd sings this song so well.  Listen to these words:

You had it all
But you didn’t want it
Somebody else got it
Now you want to tell your friends
You want it back

Now you’re down and brokenhearted
I bet you didn’t know it could hurt so bad
I gave my all and did you right
Then I found out you didn’t care at all
The reason why I sing this song
It makes me feel good
Just to say…

Chorus
You had it all
But you didn’t want it
Somebody else got it
Now you want it back
You had it all
Now you done lost it
Somebody else got it
Now you want to tell your friends
You want it back

It feels so good
To do what I’m doing cause I had two jobs
To take care of you
But no more should I go through it
I found me a new love and she’s all about it
I’ve done my time and now it’s over
I wish you the best and nothing less

It’s over now!  No more, baby!
He said he's done his time and now it's over!
I love it!

Bigg Robb - "If I Get Drunk"

Bigg Robb sends a powerful message in this southern soul song. He tells the listeners not to drink and drive and if you see me drunk, be a friend and take my keys.  Those are wise words for everyone to follow and I love him for putting out a song with a great message, an awesome melody, and a make-you-want-to-move beat.  I first heard this song in a club and fell in love with it.  Everyone loves to go out and party but make sure you make arrangements ahead of time for a designated driver.  Then, party hard and have a great time!  Go'head Bigg Robb!!!  (You can put on a shirt, though.)

If I get drunk tonight
Somebody please, please, make sure I get home
If I get too tipsy
Somebody please, please, make sure I get home

Going down to the club
To have a real good time
And party all night long
Give me some juice ya’ll and some Tanqueray
And soon it will be on
The sound of music
Cause I wanna dance ya’ll
Get up do the electric slide
But if I start looking like I’m tore up, ya’ll
Somebody take my keys and please don’t let me drive

Now I need somebody to look out for me
Just like I would look out for you
Cause it ain’t no secret ya’ll
Of what I’m going to the club to do
And bartender, I’ll bet you’re ready
To serve it up all night long
And tell the dee jay
Put on Mel Waiters’ Got My Whiskey song
Cause I’ve come out to party and I’ve got my money
I’ve got my whiskey but if I get too tipsy
Somebody please, please, make sure I get home

Enjoy!!

Lebrado - "Fire"

You know you’re behind the times and old school when your kids have to define words for you. Case in point – “twerk!” According to the Urban Dictionary, ” twerk” is to “work one’s body, as in dancing, especially the rear end.” There are also a few other definitions that aren’t as gentle. I had no idea. In spite of it all, I really like this Lebrado song which has been out for a few years now. It’s still pretty heavy in rotation on the southern soul stations. Lebrado is a very talented artist and I love his music. The man can sing.  On this version of "Fire," you can even hear his brother K-Ci  (of K-Ci and JoJo) singing.

On a different note, I have to tell you that I was disappointed when I ordered this CD from the lebrado.net website – I never received it. Even after sending several emails, I never got a response. After complaints and dispute, many thanks to paypal for reimbursing me!  I'll order it from somewhere else soon because his music is great.

Here is the beginning and first verse of “Fire.”

I want to dance with you, slow grind all night with you
You know I’ve been missing you

Sitting at home, thinking about you baby
The way you put it on me, it took me higher
The way you move that body, the way you work that thang
You know it ought to be a crying shame
You got my nose wide open
Thinking of you day and night
You’ve got that fire girl
Your fire burns so bright
She moves it to the left y'all and back to the right
And down the middle, she works it all night
She’s got that fire!

Twerk that twerk that thang!
Enjoy!

Southern Soul Paradise - 10,000 Hits

I’ve been listening to southern soul music a long time, way before it was even called southern soul. My father loved all kinds of music but his heart was with the blues and I grew up listening to Joe Simon, Denise LaSalle, and so many other blues artists that he played on our stereo. We were a military family and although we moved around a lot, my Dad’s heart was with the blues. We settled in my parent’s home of Alabama after he retired and I later moved “up north” after college. On my trips home, I would make cassette tapes of the blues that I heard on the radio, I eventually graduated to CDs, and now, in this internet age, a whole new world has opened up for me. I can now listen online all of the time to local south-central Alabama radio stations like WKXN (I love Lewis Dee) and WBFZ. I also love southernsoulradio.com, WDLT in Mobile, Spice Internet Radio, WMPR, and a lot of the southern soul sites that stream on the world wide web.  There are also great sites that offer so much information that we were never able to get before - places like Soul Blues Report, Daddy B. Nice's Southern Soul RnB, and a whole lot of others.

I started this blog because I love southern soul. It began with me writing mainly for myself and with the hope that there were others who love the music as much as I do. Tons of people migrate from Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia to the north and we just don’t have the luxury of turning on the radio and hearing southern soul. I wanted this blog to be a vehicle to keep people like me informed.

A huge thank you to everyone who clicks on Southern Soul Paradise! I can’t believe that there have been more than 10,000 hits and I can only hope you enjoy reading my entries as much as I love writing them.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you!

O. B. Buchana - "I Can't Choose"

O. B. has the age-old problem - he loves both his woman and his wife and he just can't choose between them.  He says he's hooked and dingling on the line.  He even asks his mother for advice and she tells him to follow his heart (moms always know what to say).  The problem is that he only has one heart and his woman and wife are tearing it apart.  Oh O.B., O.B., in spite of your dilemma, this is a beautiful song and if this isn't southern soul, I don't know what is!!  I can play this song over and over and over.

I'm just wondering, how did O.B. go from "I Can't Choose" to "I Want Both of You?"

I’ve been thinking constantly
About a situation that's worrying me
I’ve got a woman I truly love
I got a wife at home and she’s my world
I know one day I’m gonna have to choose
But I’m lost in love and I’m so confused
I’ve been wondering what to do
Said I’ve got two women that keep me so confused
Ya’ll please help me, help me understand
All I got to say is
I can’t, I can’t, I can’t choose between the two
I can’t choose (make up my mind) between the two
I’m hooked and I’m dingling on the line

I called my mother to get some advice
She said son, follow your heart and you’ll do what’s right
But here’s the problem I only have one heart
And between the two they’re tearing it apart
See it feels so good when I’m with my wife
And when I’m with my woman I’m in paradise
Ya’ll I’ve been wondering what to do
See I’ve got two women that keep me so confused
Ya’ll please help me, tell me what should I do
I got one thing to tell you
I can’t, I can’t, I can’t choose between the two
I can’t choose between the two (make up my mind)
I’m hooked and I’m dingling on the line

I got two children in my life
One by my woman and the other one by my wife
24-7 I rip and run
One sees me leave and the other one sees me coming
I know it’s wrong, there’s no excuse
I want to stop ya’ll but I just can’t choose
I don’t know what’s going on
Said I’ve got two women that keep me so confused
Ya’ll please help me, tell O.B. what to do
All I can say is I can’t, I can’t, I can't choose between the two
I can’t make up my mind because I’m hooked ya'll
And I’m dingling on the line
I can’t, I can’t decide, I can’t, I’m about to lose my mind

So I called Willie Clayton and here’s what he said
The three people O.B. they’re still sleeping in my bed
They can’t help with it, not a little,
Even Marvin Sease, says he’s still stuck in the middle
I’m going crazy, oh I’m about to snap
When I call Carl Sims, he said O.B. I'm still trapped
O. B., O.B., what are you doing to me?

I always enjoy discovering new sites that stream southern soul music.   While checking out the Soul Blues Report (http://soulbluesreport.com/), I looked under their Soul Blues Links and clicked on the Soul and Blues Report (http://www.soulandbluesreport.com/website/).  There is a lot of good stuff there and I went through some of their Radio Reports which show what many southern soul stations are playing around the country.  On this link, I found a new southern soul internet site that sounds pretty good.  It's called Spice Internet Radio and they're based out of Philadelphia.

Listen to http://www.spice-ir.net/, the best in oldies and southern soul - you'll enjoy it.

Donnie Ray - "Let's Go Dancing"

This Donnie Ray song came out around 2000 and it's on my classics list.  I LOVE this song.  Yes, I love a lot of songs but 11 years later and this song is as great now as it was then.  Donnie Ray's talking to his girl and says that it's been so long since they've been out on the town and he wants to go out and have a good time.  He wants to go dancing, just the two of them.  (How can you resist a guy telling you that???)  And all through the song, he keeps saying that all he wants to do is dance with you.  Oh man, I'm in love! (smile) You're going to enjoy this song.  Donnie Ray's voice is absolutely beautiful and the music is amazing!  Sounds like he has a dynamite horn section!!!

Now slide on your shoes
And that pretty red dress, too
You see I want to dance the night away with you
Now hurry baby, now we can’t be late
I got to get there darling, I can’t wait

Let’s go dancing, all night long
Just me and you
Let’s go dancing, all night long
That’s all that I want to do girl, is dance with you
Let’s go dancing, all night long
That’s all I want to do girl is dance with you

Don’t you worry baby our friends will be there
If we miss a step honey, they won’t even care
Don’t you be afraid to let your hair down
I like the way you move your body
Woo, girl you’re getting down
Girl the way you move gets me so excited
Trying to deal with emotions
Girl, I just can’t fight it, come on!

That’s all I want to do, girl, is dance with you
Put on your dancing shoes, come on girl
Don’t you worry baby our friends will be there
If we miss a step honey, they won’t even care
That’s all I want to do girl, is dance with you
Please…

Said I like the way you do your thang, girl
Now put on your dancing shoes
Come out on the floor
I want to see you move your body
Do it some more
Come on, please let me have this last dance
Please Mr. Dee Jay, play that song for me
So me and my baby, so me and my baby can
Do like we used to do….

Awesome song! This man can sing!
Enjoy

David Brinston - "Party Till The Lights Go Out"

"Party Till The Lights Go Out" is that song that's perfect for a house party and a night at the club!  I adore David Brinston and have been in love with him since "You're So Freak, Girl" (see my blog from March 6, 2011).  "Party Till The Lights Go Out" has a nice easy beat, clean and simple lyrics, and David Brinston's smoky sounding voice which gives this song that extra kick.  David says that having a party is a great way to relax and wrap up a tough week.  Everyone's getting their groove on!  His chorus says that we're gonna party till the lights go out because it's nothing but a party.  That's what I'm talking about!

It’s a party tonight
Everybody’s in the mood
People are everywhere
Drinking that gin and juice
And all the ladies looking good, yeah
With their new dresses on
Everybody dancing, oh yeah
They don’t want to go home

Chorus
We're gonna party till the lights go out
Nothing but a party
We're gonna party till the lights go out
Nothing but a party

The clock is ticking (tick tock)
Baby its ticking fast
We’re having a good time, oh yeah
Tonight we’re gonna make it last
Get your groove on, baby, yeah
Like you never did before
But you can’t party sitting down, oh no
Gotta get down on the floor

It’s been a long week
It’s time to have some fun
Forget about your troubles
Let the party begun
You might be with someone’s woman
Or somebody’s man
We ain’t here to knock it
We just want to dance

Repeat chorus

We party so hard, yeah
All the smoke is in the air
And all the honeys looking good, oh yeah
And they are everywhere
You’ve got to get it while the getting is good, yeah
Because baby I’m gonna get mine
After a good party, party,
You feel better every time

Love you David!
