Robert Tillman - "I Found Love"

I LOVE this song!  It's taken from Robert Tillman's "Coochie Whipped" CD. It's awesome. Thank you Spice Internet Radio for introducing it to me!

Every day is sunshine!!
P.S. Listen to the opening of this song and Carl Sims' "Seventeen Days" and tell me what you think - the melody is almost the same.

Tony Troutman/Artie"Blues Boy" White - "Your Man Is Home Tonight"

Did you know that both Tony Troutman and Artie "Blues Boy" White released "Your Man Is Home Tonight?"  Did you know that Tony wrote this song?  And, did you know that Tony was one of Roger Troutman's brothers (of Zapp)?  Interesting trivia!  I actually love both songs (they're very similar) but kind of like Tony Troutman's version a teeny bit better.  Different sites tell me different years these albums were released, but Tony's came out first. Here are both versions below.

Nellie "Tiger" Travis

Nellie "Tiger" Travis has one of the most popular songs this year - "Mr. Sexy Man" (see the video below and my post dated 7/19/2013).  "If I Back It Up" is also fantastic (see the video below and my post dated 4/21/2014).  I'm excited because she's going to be in concert in the DC area on July 26.  She'll be performing at Lamont's Entertainment Complex down in Pomonkey, Maryland.  (Yes, Pomonkey is an actual place.)  She's also performing at the Elk's Lodge in Selma, Alabama on July 18.

For more information about her, including her tour schedule, check out her website: http://nellietigertravis.com/.  Here's some bio info that was taken from her site:

Nellie “Tiger” Travis couldn't be more destined to sing the blues. She was born deep in the delta of Mississippi in the early 60′s. As in most small towns, the church was a main focal point and Nellie grew up singing gospel music. The nickname “Tiger” was born after Nellie came to Chicago. She and a cousin were hanging out at B.L.U.E.S on Halsted brainstorming about what to call her. Nellie wanted the nickname “Angel”, but her cousin quickly rejected that and came up with “Tiger” which aptly describes her feline-like, intense vocal style as well as her feisty, independent personality.

Alonzo Reid - "Hooked On Your Love"

You've got me hooked on your love and it's driving me crazy!  You know how it is when you are so much in love. Alonzo Reid is from Montgomery, Alabama, and here's part of his bio (taken from http://www.coyotemusic.com/artists/detail/alonzo-reid/).

Alonzo "Mr. Undercover Freak" Reid earns his moniker by writing and performing a mature brand of R&B born of the tradition pioneered by the late Marvin Sease, for whom Alonzo played drums and percussion for 14 years. Alonzo began playing drums at age 6, and grew up to play behind gospel legends Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Soul Stirrers, and Aretha Franklin. Adding to an already impressive career, Alonzo also played with Bobby Womack and Mel Waiters.

Dr. Nick on WPFW

I love radio and there's nothing like listening to a live show with a real dee jay - especially a good one! If you're in the DC metro area or anywhere around the world wide web, check out Dr. Nick from 2 - 4pm every Saturday on 89.3, WPFW FM (www.wpfw.org).  His "Southern Soul Rumpin" show is fantastic and filled with great music. He knows a lot about the artists and the music and is a joy to listen to on Saturday afternoons.

Denise LaSalle - "Trapped By This Thing Called Love"

The original "Trapped" was one of my Dad's favorite records when it was released back in 1972 and he played it all the time.  I was in love with southern soul then and didn't know it!!  Well, Denise remade her famous song back in the late 90s and it sounds just as good now as it did back then.  I love this live version and actually hear it quite a bit on different Alabama southern soul stations.

Bigg Robb - "Float On"

Here is Bigg Robb's version of the 1977 hit by the Floaters.  He has Omar Cunningham and Archie Love singing along with him but what I like the best is his list of eight must-have things that a woman needs:

1. Must be God fearing!
2. Love your family and yourself
3. Be extremely respectful, mature, and classy at all times
4. Be a lady in the streets
5. Make collard greens (with smoked turkey necks - he doesn't do pork)
6. Be independent and strong
7. Have your own money
8. Be willing to make love all the time

Not a bad list!

I heard this song for the first time this morning on Selma's WBFZ (http://www.wbfzfmradio.net/) with Rockin' Jeter -Selma's Soul Leader. (I think I've played it about five times straight - lol) It is a beautiful song about a man who has been deeply hurt. Take time and listen to the words.  You can really feel his pain.

This record can be found on Sir Jonathan Burton's 2013 "Juke Box Party" CD.

Stacy Brooks Blues Band

There's a close relationship between southern soul and the blues. I had a chance to see the Stacy Brooks Blues Band not too long ago and was impressed with the Queen of DC Blues.  She has an awesome voice and she and her band sang a variety of well-known songs (i.e. Wang Dang Doodle, Meet Me WithYour Black Drawers On, etc.) along with original songs (My Name Is Stacy, etc.).

The Stacy Brooks Band won the DC Blues Battle of the Bands in 2013 and have competed with other bands around the world.  She currently has a role in the play "Ghost Of The Blues" where she portrays Etta James and Koko Taylor.  If you hear her voice, you'll understand why she has these great parts.

Southern Soul-Blues by David Whiteis

I came across a fantastic book titled Southern Soul-Blues by David Whiteis, a book that should be read by everyone wanting to know anything about the music we call southern soul.  Unfortunately, hard copy print media including books, newspapers, and magazines are slowly becoming obsolete, but here’s a book that discusses southern soul like you’ve never heard and provides a ton of info.  Mr. Whiteis wrote this book to not only give a snapshot of the current southern soul scene but to also show us about our musical history.  He profiles some great veteran and new artists and has wonderful stories.

In addition to singing, who knew Denise LaSalle could write??  She provided an excellent foreword on “America’s Prodigal Son” and has an interesting way in which she describes the life of the southern soul artist.  I like how she talks about how people in other countries love and respect the music while America has little or no regard for it.  She, as other artists, love America because it is home but we need to wake up and accept the music and give it the respect it rightfully deserves.   Otherwise, southern soul will always be the prodigal son.  That is so deep yet so true.

In the next few weeks, I’ll be posting tidbits from different chapters of Southern Soul-Blues .  I can’t believe the things that I’ve learned about Sir Charles Jones, Willie Clayton, Ms. Jody, and other artists!!

Stay tuned.

Tucka - "Love Doctor"

Tuckaaaa!! Oh, I love him so!!!  In fact, I've never heard a bad song from him and I really think I could listen to him all day and all night. "Love Doctor" is a song about a man who wants to take care of the girl, heal her broken heart, and make her feel better!  Tucka says he could be your shot, your medicine, and your love doctor.  Just let him know where to begin.  Lord have mercy!

Calling all ladies
Wherever you may be
Love is a dangerous game that we play oh baby

I know you’ve been hurt
I know you’ve been treated wrong
But listen baby, I got what you need to move on
You say you don’t want no relationship
Now who got time for that
Just come to my office
Tell my nurse what’s wrong
Then head to the back

I could be your shot
(undercover lover)
I could be your medicine
(undercover lover)
I could be your love doctor
(undercover lover)
Just let me know where to begin
(undercover lover)

So you say you’re having problems
Problems with pain
Do you feel it in your head, is it around your chest
Or is it down your legs
See I don’t mind checking every spot
Cause that’s just part of my job
But I want you to know, I’m not responsible
For what happens when I stop

Chorus

Love is a dangerous game that we play, oh baby
Ok now, let me get this right
So you say you feeling pain
But you’re not exactly sure where it's at, is that correct
Ok, so you’re saying you need me to check - everything?
Ok, I just want to make sure, you know what I'm saying
That you understand exactly what you’re asking me to do

Chorus

Beautiful!

I was going on vacation and took an eight-hour road trip the other day and, as usual, listened to music on the radio, my iPod, Sirius XM, and my phone.  Some may think I'm a little crazy when it comes to music - and I am!! LOL  I believe that music and the grace of God can cure everything.  Anyway, I was so happy when I used TuneIn on my phone and picked up Lewis Dee on a weekday on WKXN out of Montgomery, Alabama.  His great personality combined with good music helped me get down the road.  It definitely made my trip go a lot faster.  Thank you Lewis Dee!!

To learn a little about O.B., here's his bio that I found on www.soulbluesmusic.com:

Born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, Buchana spent his childhood in Clarksdale. O.B. began singing when he was only 8 in the gospel choir at his Baptist church. By the time he was a teenager the gospel group Mighty Suns Of God selected him to be their lead singer. In the early 1990's O.B. signed with the record label Blue River and he recorded his first hit single "Back Up Lover". His first disc "It's Over" followed to critical acclaim. Next he signed with Suzie Q Records for "I Got Caught". His career has truly taken off after signing with Ecko Records

He set her car on fire and got charged with arson.  Of course, he got arrested and they put him in jail.  And guess what, he had to call his wife to get him out on bail.  That's messed up!  Now that's the blues!!!
