Betty Wright - "Secretary"

This is classic Betty Wright from 1974!!

It's very ordinary for the secretary
To take a man away from his wife
Girls, we make it necessary for the secretary
To put a little joy in his life
She takes the time to listen
To what he has to say
While all you do is nag him
A thousand times a day
Her hair is always pretty
And her clothes are always stylish
But you greet him with your hair in rollers
And that's outdated and so childish
Oh, it's very ordinary for the secretary
To take a man away from his wife
Why make it necessary for the secretary
To put a little joy in his life
Are you there when he needs you
Are your favors less than cute
And when he tries to love you
Do you find something else to do
Now the ordinary girl may not wear pearls
Or diamonds on each hand
Oh, but like the secretary, wooh
She knows how to please her man
Oh, it's not extraordinary for the secretary
To take a man away from his wife
You see, we make it necessary for the secretary
To put a little joy in his life
You see, life's a bowl of cherries
For all the secretaries
Oh, it's very ordinary, it's not extraordinary
Girls, don't be contrary or you'll make it necessary
Your life can be so merry just like the secretary
Life's a bowl of cherries

Shirleta Settles - Not Just A Voice

Shirleta Settles mostly sings R&B and blues and doesn’t sing a lot of southern soul…not yet, at least. But I think she’s going to convert and come over to the other side. 😊

Shirleta is a native DC resident and has been singing professionally for over 25 years.  She is kind of soft spoken but has a commanding personality; she's petite and powerful.  She has an air of confidence, a beautiful smile, and is naturally curious about the things happening around her.  I had the honor of talking to Shirleta at a southern soul music festival and we hit it off right away.  We both love all kinds of music.

When you listen to Shirleta sing, you’ll hear that her voice is beautiful and strong.  She adds life to her music and is extremely talented; this girl can really sing.

I asked her who influenced her singing and she said that some of the people she admired and impacted her life were Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Mahalia Jackson.

Like me, Shirleta said that she loves to write and has been writing all her life.  Her father was a singer and she even used to write the lyrics for some of his songs.  As a writer, she enjoys writing poetry and words mean a lot to her - she enjoys hearing songs that have a meaning.  As you know, southern soul songs always tell a story, often of infidelity, but not always.  There are songs about everyday life and you’ve probably experienced some of the emotions that southern soul brings.  For instance, there are songs about being cheated on, being the other woman, and walking away when things are bad.  Then, there are songs about that wonderful man or woman who is your everything, songs about dancing and having a good time, that hole in the wall, and many other situations you’ve experienced.  Of course, there are also the songs about making love and sex but isn’t that real life???

Shirleta is a humble person and has a kind heart.  This is evident because she loves working with senior citizens and children in her community.  In fact, she is actively involved in her community and has a sincere passion for helping people.  She is a former vice president of her civic association and is also a former Advisory Neighborhood Commisioner (ANC) in the District of Columbia.  ANCs are representatives of their districts and are responsible for a wide range of policies and programs that affect their neighborhoods.  This can include traffic, parking, recreation, trash collection, police protection, and so much more.  That work takes a lot of commitment and dedication and Shirleta’s service is about making a difference in the lives of her neighbors and fellow residents.

Shirleta graduated from the University of the District of Columbia and majored in respiratory therapy.  She worked for a while as a respiratory therapist - what an awesome occupation.

Shirleta Settles is a singer but she is known more for being an entertainer and loves to involve the audience in her shows.  She has performed all over the world and, if you ever get a chance to see her perform, please go!  She isn’t singing much southern soul yet, but it’s coming!

For more information on this dynamic performer, please check out her website: http://shirletasettlessings.com.

L.J. Echols - Southern Soul Music Festival in Pomonkey, Maryland

LJ Echols is a great artist and a wonderful guy who grew up in Bassfield, Mississippi, a small town about 20 miles from Hattiesburg.  He has a gospel background and sang in a gospel group with his parents and other family members.  He later turned to R&B and started singing solo southern soul around 2004.

I had a chance to talk to LJ so I could find out a little about him.  He writes, produces, and sings his own music and when I asked him who influenced him, he said that it was Sam Cooke.

LJ started his own record label called Neckbone Records and has a band with the same name, Neckbone. Neckbone performed with LJ in Pomonkey and they are excellent - a very talented band!

I asked LJ what he wanted people to know about him.  He said that he is humble and that he loves people.  I can attest to that because I found him to be friendly and a people-person. He was nice, considerate, willing to take pictures with everyone, and was extremely patient.  LJ also said that he wants people to know that he has a good attitude, may be a little country 😊, and that he loves the Lord.  Amen!!!!!

At the show, some of the songs that LJ sang are as follows:
Got To Tell Somebody
14-16
Mississippi Boy
Little Bluebird (awesome, awesome, awesome)
Peter Pumpkin Eater

I’m sure you know his huge hits, “From The Back” and “Good Motor,” but one of my favorites is “How Low Can You Go!!!!” I may not be able to play it around my kids but the beat, music, and his voice are just amazing!!  A drunk person speaks a sober mind...
I love LJ Echols!  He’s a good man and I love his music.  Go see him whenever and wherever you can!!

Karen Wolfe Bass - Southern Soul Music Festival in Pomonkey, Maryland

Karen performed at the Southern Soul Music Festival in beautiful downtown Pomonkey, Maryland, and she was awesome!!

If you’re man enough to leave, you can best believe that I’m woman enough to let you go. Yes!!  That is our national anthem! Lol I love, love, love Karen Wolfe Bass!  In this song, like so much of her music, you know what she’s talking about because you’ve either experienced it or know someone who has.

She put on a great show and some of the hits she sang were:
Southern Soul Party Mood
Back Door Love Affair
Stuttering
That Bitch Ain’t Me

Because Karen Wolfe Bass is a huge celebrity, I admit that I was totally star struck before I talked to her but she is soooo nice! It was like talking to someone you’ve known for a long time.

Karen Wolfe Bass is originally from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and now lives in Memphis, Tennessee.  She started singing as a little girl and grew up singing gospel music.  She had two gospel groups – Direction and Serenity.

Whether you’re a singer or not, there are usually performers or artists who have had an impact on your life. I asked Karen about some of the artists who encouraged and motivated her and she said definitely Denise LaSalle, Betty Wright, and Mavis Staples.  For those of you who don’t know, Karen was related to Denise LaSalle and not only spent a lot of time with her but sang with her as well.

I asked Karen about the direction she thought that southern soul music was going.  She said that people are sleeping on it now but they’re going to wake up soon!  I feel the same.  I believe southern soul is becoming more popular, mainly for two reasons. One, the internet is making it more accessible.  At one time, you could only hear the blues/southern soul when you went to the south and turned on your radio.  Now, you can hear southern soul anytime and anywhere you want.  I listen all day and night from my computer, phone, and Echo. And secondly, an increasing number of young artists are singing it.  It’s not a dying art – new artists are coming out all of the time and are keeping our music alive.

Karen said that she has a new single, “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” and she’s working on a Christmas CD with Sir Charles Jones.  I can’t wait to hear that collaboration but wouldn’t it be great if she recorded an entire Christmas CD??!!

Karen is a really down-to-earth person and says that she performs for her fans.  We keep her motivated.  She said that she loves us and will keep putting music out for us; she only asks that we keep supporting her.  Don’t worry Karen, we love you and will support you in everything you do!! 😊💕
