Lomax - "Put It All Up In There"

I love all things Lomax!  His song "Swing It" had such a clean, fresh sound (see my post dated 8/13/2013) and I love "Put It All Up In There."  It is a great dance song with a nice beat; it has a really catchy melody. Here is a portion of his bio that I found on his Facebook page (Lomax Fan Connection):

Lomax Spaulding was born in a small town in Georgia. He began playing the guitar, the piano, and singing at a very young age. Lomax’s first exposure to public performance began in the Church. A deeply spiritual person, Lomax believes that his talent is a gift from God. (He left gospel and toured with tons of R&B groups for a few years.  He later returned to gospel for awhile.)   He wanted to broaden his horizons and began his Southern Soul experience as a guitar player on Tony Troutman’s hit, “Your Man Is Home Tonight.” Lomax worked with Mel Waiters and collaborated with him on several musical projects, such as the hit single, “Got No Curfew.” Lomax also produced and performed on the music of Charles Wilson “She Can Make It Do Something;” produced and performed on the music of Gina Brown “We’re Having A Party” and “G-Slide;” and was nominated for ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Record Producer’ for 2012 by the Blues Critic Awards!  Lomax is now pursuing a life long dream of recording and performing country music. He has been writing and singing country songs since the beginning, but never had the opportunity to take it to a higher level. The time has come and he is ready to share his amazing heartfelt music with the world!!

Whether he's singing gospel, R&B, southern soul, or country, Lomax is a multi-talented young man and I wish him all of the best! I am, however, hoping to hear more southern soul from him.

Enjoy!!

Ghetto Cowboy (featuring Bigg Robb) - "Pop A Pill"

I wasn't familiar with Ghetto Cowboy's work but I like this guy.  He has an incredible voice and reminds me of Marvin Sease.  I had the pleasure of meeting him at a southern soul concert in Pomonkey, Maryland.  If you're not from Charles County, you may want to MapQuest it to see just where it is.  Reminds me of Alabama........ He told me that he's performed with a lot of southern soul artists and you can tell that he knows what he's doing. During the show, he sang songs like "One In A Million", "Sho Wasn't Me", and the song I have below, "Pop A Pill."  He's got a good stage presence and sings for the crowd. I bought his greatest hits CD and really like what I hear.  I'll have to check him out more!

Girls, watch out when the guy says that you make him want to pop a pill so he can give you a thrill!!

Enjoy!

Bobby "Blue" Bland - "This Time I'm Gone For Good"

Lewis Dee (of WKXN) always gives me something that I hadn't heard in awhile. So, when this Bobby "Blue" Bland song came on the radio, all I could do was just turn up the volume and listen as I sat back and closed my eyes. Talk about singing the blues with soul.

I should have stayed gone when I left you before.   Make sure it's understood that this time I'm gone for good.  What a story!!!

P.S.  Go past the first 24 seconds of the video...
It's warm outside but for me there's no sunshine.

Sir Charles Jones featuring Willie Clayton - "Do You Feel"

Sir Charles Jones and Willie Clayton - a good match; their voices blend well together.  This song is a tribute to some of our southern soul legends that we've lost.

Chorus
Do you feel like partying tonight
Do you feel like partying tonight

Said I worked hard all this week
And I'm ready to get on down
I'm gonna take my baby to the club and hear them sounds
Cause tonight I want to get on down
Mr. Bartender, pour me a drink
And give my baby what she wants, pour us a drink
So I can show my baby my new moves
So I can ask my baby, do she want to groove

Chorus

I want to step to the left and to the right
Put my arms around my baby and hold her tight
Cause I feel so good tonight
Me and my baby looking good in white
R. Kelly playing as he struts so fine
Here comes Tyrone Davis, change my mind
Mr. Dee Jay can you play
A little Sir Charles Jones, it's Friday

Chorus

Done worked up an appetite and I see
Say the club got good food for my baby and me
I've got a little fish and grits and my baby won't stay
Everything's smelling so good, everything ya'll made
Can I order a little champagne for my baby and me
Cause I really want to celebrate and I'm happy to be
With my pretty little lady all night long
And I want to party ya'll to the break of dawn
Cause I'm feeling so good ya'll and I'm feeling so right
So damn happy to be with my baby tonight

Chorus

Wave your hands in the air
And wave em like you just don't care
And if you're ready to party like me and Willie Clayton
Put your hands in the air...

I'll let my grandmother get some of this groove....

Mavis Staples - "I Like The Things About Me"

A friend sent this song to me.  I never really associated Mavis Staples with the blues (gospel and r&b maybe) but this sure sounds like the blues to me!!  I looked in the mirror, what did I see?  A brand new image of the same old me. Now, I wonder why should I be surprised? I like the things about me that I once despised!

Thanks Margo!

Carnes Park - Mother's Day Blues Concert

I had no idea where Carnes Park was located (it's in White Hall, Alabama) but it is the place to be for the Mother's Day Blues Concert. If you're ever in the Montgomery/Selma area for any blues concert sponsored in part by WKXN, you definitely must go!  I wasn't able to see the entire Mother's Day show (I was driving solo and trying to get back to Camden before late - those country roads are DARK!) but the artists I did see were fantastic.  I missed seeing WKXN radio personality Lewis Dee but plan to catch him next time.  Much love and thanks to him for all he does!!

Roscoe Miller
The first person I saw at Carnes Park was the legendary Killer Diller Roscoe Miller!  What an honor it was to finally meet this man!  He's the CEO of WKXN,WKXK FM 102.7 radio station, hosts his own radio show from 9:00 - 3:00 weekdays, promotes shows, is well known throughout the entire south, and does a tremendous job with the community.

Bigg Robb
Bigg Robb performed at this show and he is something else!!!  Even though he's a big guy, he can move and boy, can he sing.  You can tell he loves the audience and the audience loves him.  They didn't want him to get off the stage.  Don't let his costume fool you - the man is good. Some of his hits that he sang include "Fill It Up," "Good Love Will Make You Cry," "Sugaa Shack," "If I Get Drunk Tonight," "Mama's Song," and so much more.  He has an energetic band but I was really impressed with vocalist Toia Jones - she is so very talented and has an incredible voice.  He ended his part of the show with Lewis Dee's theme song - "Grown and Sexy."  If Bigg Robb is ever in concert anywhere near you, go see him!

Tucka
Tucka is just one of my all-time favorite artists to see.  He is just so doggone cute and has a smooth sound.  I love him.  He's the self-proclaimed King of Swing and is definitely crossover material.  I really like that he's bringing the younger sound to southern soul - he's keeping the music alive!

Great show - hope to see more artists in concert soon!!

Little Milton - "That's How Strong My Love Is"

I always loved O.V. Wright's live version of "That's How Strong My Love Is" and used it as my road song - it is great traveling music. (See my post dated 1/27/2011.) But lately, I've been hearing Little Milton's version of this song and man oh man, it's awesome.  I'm not usually into remakes but this is something else.  O.V. originally recorded this song back in 1964 and did a 15-minute medley live in Japan in 1979.  Quite a few artists have redone "That's How Strong My Love Is"  and Little Milton redid it in 1973 - I love it.

Little Milton starts his monologue with a story.  He overheard a young guy who was talking to his girlfriend on the phone and says that what he's going to tell us is so soulful.  He heard the guy tell his girl: "Darling you know you mean everything to me. In fact, you’re my whole world and if ever I lost you, my whole world would be at an end."  That's some strong love.

Here are two verses that I love from this song:
If I were that sun up there
I would glow with love everywhere
I’d even be the moon
When the sun goes down
So you could see that I’m still around

If I were a fish that had been cast upon dry land
I would stay there if you would let me hold your hand
I’d even be the wind for a rolling storm
I’d stop for one moment if you would just let me walk you home

I could go on and on about the lyrics because they are so deep.  They show you just how strong love can be.

Everybody wants to be told they’re needed and loved once in awhile.

Southern Soul Music - Lewis Dee

It's wonderful being down south and hearing live southern soul music. I can't live without the internet and love how it has made our access to southern soul right at our fingertips.  But you know, there's nothing like being able to turn on the radio and listening live.

When I'm in Alabama (and wherever I am in the country), my most favorite on-air personality is Lewis Dee (http://grownandsexyradio.webs.com/) and I listen to him each Saturday on Montgomery's WXKN.  I also listen live to Selma's WBFZ (http://www.wbfzfmradio.net/), Mobile's WDLT (http://www.1041wdlt.com/), and Camden's WQLS (http://q905.com/).

Let me know if you have a favorite station that plays southern soul - I'd love to spread the word and let others know!

Queen Emily - "Your Used To Be"

Since her 2008 debut on "America's Got Talent," I only hear Queen Emily on southern soul stations. R&B, you're missing out!

If you've ever been in love, you know that losing love can be devastating. It can be hard to be alone because those memories keep getting in the way.  She said that she can't get used to being your used to be.

Such a pretty ballad.

Lynn White featuring J. Blackfoot - "May The Best Man Win"

Lynn White and J. Blackfoot were a beautiful combination; this is really an awesome song.

You say that you really love me
And I know that he cares a little bit about me, too
I can't make up my mind, what is the best thing to do
So I'll just wait it out and I'll wait it out
And may the best man win, may the best man win

What makes it so good
I don't mind waiting
I don't mind giving up, leaving town
So you can make up your mind
Each moment we shared
Is enough to keep me hanging on
So I'll just wait around, I'll just wait around
And may the best man win, may the best man win

Love, sweet love, makes me wonder sometime
And all I ask of you baby is please, please be kind
What makes it so good
I don't mind waiting
I don't mind giving up, leaving town
For you to make up your mind
I'll wait it out, I'll wait it out
Said I'll wait it out, I'll wait it out
That's all I want you to do
Just wait it out baby, see I know the best man's gonna win
And baby I know the best man's gonna be me
The best man is gonna be me
I don't mind waiting baby, I'll wait it out
Yes, I'll just have to wait it out
Will you wait it out, will you wait it out Lynn baby
If you would just give me 15 minutes of your time
I believe I can make you understand...

I can make you understand it's me you really love!

Jaye Hammer - "Lay The Hammer Down"

Have you heard a song you really like and you really can't explain why?  Well this is it for me - I love this song.  Jaye tells his girl that he'll be home in a few minutes and when he gets there, he'll lay the hammer down.  What a man, what a man!

Ooh girl I know just what you want, yeah
Honey you know just what you need
You walking around with your mind on love
The kind you can only get from me
Just hold on baby, soon I’ll be around
In just a little while
I’m gonna lay the hammer down

Chorus
I’m gonna lay the hammer down
I can lay the hammer down
(Got to lay the hammer down)
I’m gonna lay the hammer down
I can lay the hammer down

Ten days without is much too long
For a woman like you with a love so strong
I’m headed to the airport right away, aw girl
So I can be home by the break of day
And when I get there baby I won’t be fooling around
I’ll be in the mood, oh
I’ve got to lay the hammer down

Chorus

Sometime baby I have to be gone
And I know you can’t wait girl for me to get back home
But when you hear oh the doorbell sound
I hope you’re ready baby
Cause I’ll be there to lay the hammer down

Chorus

Ooh baby you know you can count on me yeah
Cause girl I know just what to do
It’s been too long and you need it bad
Old Jaye is gonna lay the hammer down for you
Just hold on baby, soon I’ll be around
Girl I’ll ease your mind
Cause I’ll be there to lay the hammer down

Chorus (2x)

Just hold on baby soon I’ll be around
And when I get there
Old Jaye is gonna lay the hammer down
Chorus
Just hold on baby…

Just hold on baby, soon I'll be around!
