Howlin' Wolf - "Spoonful"

You probably know "Spoonful" and while I wouldn't characterize it as southern soul, it is definitely the blues.  There is something about this song that I love. Howling' Wolf had a very unique voice and an amazing background.  When you get a chance, take look at wikipedia and other sites and read his bio. One of the things that impressed me the most is that he was so financially successful that he was able to offer his band members not only a decent salary but also benefits such as health insurance.  They say that this enabled him to hire his pick of available musicians and keep his band one of the best around.

The following info was taken from Wikipedia:
Chester Arthur Burnett (June 10, 1910 – January 10, 1976), known as Howlin' Wolf, was a Chicago blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, originally from Mississippi. With a booming voice and looming physical presence, he is one of the best-known Chicago blues artists.

When asked about his stage name, he explained the origin of the name Howlin' Wolf: "I got that from my grandfather" who would tell him stories about wolves in that part of the country and warn him that if he misbehaved the "howling wolves" would get him.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame listed Howlin' Wolf's "Spoonful" as one of the "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll". It is ranked number 219 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".  In 2010, the song was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame "Classics of Blues Recordings" category.

Very cool info!!  Here are the lyrics to "Spoonful."

It could be a spoonful of diamonds
Could be a spoonful of gold
Just a little spoon of your precious love
Satisfies my soul

Men lies about little
Some of ‘em cries about little
Some of ‘em dies about little
Everything fight about a spoon
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful

It could be a spoonful of coffee
Could be a spoonful of tea
But a little spoon of your precious love
Good enough for me

Men lies about that
Some of ‘em dies about that
Some of ‘em cries about that
But everything fight about a spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonful
(fightin' about a spoonful)

It could be a spoonful of water
Saved from the deserts sand
But one spoon of them fortifies
Save you from another man

Men lies about that
Some of 'em cries about that
Some of ‘em dies about that
Everybody fightin' about a spoonful
That spoon, that spoon, …

Johnnie Taylor - "Now That You've Cheated"

Johnnie Taylor gives you something to think about!!  You cheated, now was it worth it? Was it as good as you thought it was going to be???  Things that make you go hmmm....  Like he said, the grass always seems greener on the other side - now that's the truth!

Now that you've cheated
Girl did you really need it?
Now that you got caught
Was it good as you really thought?

Tucka - "Heartbreaker"

Tucka!! The King of Swing has a new, pretty ballad.

It was something about when your eyes met mine girl, it oohed me
It's like walking down the road with no sides girl, it fooled me
How was I to ever know that your love could be that strong
I thought I had the love gun moved but oh was I wrong
(now I'm not real sure of this line but that's what it sounds like lol)
Heartbreaker, why you love so strong
Heartbreaker, where did I go wrong
Heartbreaker, you got a hold on me
Heartbreaker, girl won't you set me free

Enjoy!!

J-Wonn - "24/7" Official Video

Girl you got me thinking, ooh I'm thinking about you 24/7.  Beautiful words to hear when you're in love!  J-Wonn is a soul singer who has been making southern soul hit after hit.  Here's a record that is very popular in south central Alabama and is taken from his "The Legacy Begins" CD.  He has a unique sound and produces great music.

Here's J-Wonn's bio as I found on www.allmusic.com:
Jawonn Smith, known as J-Wonn (and alternately as Jwonn), is a contemporary southern R&B artist with a youthful voice. Raised in a single-parent household, the Jackson, Mississippi native grew up in the church and sang in choirs. As he got a little older, he was drawn to R&B and rap, but he never severed his connection to gospel or the classic southern soul and blues that inspired him. "I Got This Record," a single released in 2013, became something of a regional hit, assisted by tireless touring. An album of the same title was released in 2014 through Savior Music Group. Several singles, including the ballads "I Need a Grown Woman" and "Lord I Need to Talk to You," the uptempo "We Gone Party," and the slow jam "Daddy's Girl," were issued across 2015 and 2016.

Barbara Mason - "I Am Your Woman"

This 1978 classic will most likely bring back some memories. To me, it's really a sad song.  I am your woman, she is your wife, we're the two women that's in your life...you got two too many women in your life.  Barbara is singing about a situation too many women find themselves in - falling for a married man.  As she says in this song, he's not even making an attempt to get free and yet he expects her to wait around for him.  There's a message here.
Here's a little bit about Barbara Mason as taken from Wikipedia: Mason initially focused on songwriting when she entered the music industry in her teens. As a performer, though, she had a major hit single with her third release in 1965, "Yes, I'm Ready" (#5 pop, #2 R&B), a fetching soul-pop confection that spotlighted her girlish vocals. One of the first examples of the rhythmic but lush sound that came to be called Philly soul, she had modest success throughout the rest of the decade on the small Arctic label, run by her manager, top Philadelphia disc-jockey, Jimmy Bishop. She reached the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 again in 1965 with "Sad, Sad Girl", and "Oh How It Hurts" in 1967, releasing two albums. A two-year stay with National General Records, run by a film production company, produced one album and four singles which failed to find success.
Mason started to concentrate on running her own publishing company in the late 1980s, but continues to perform occasionally. She released a new CD, Feeling Blue, in September 2007. Ms Mason is still performing to sold-out audiences in 2016. Her most recent show is at the Terrance Theater in Long Beach California.
Barbara Mason was inducted into the Soul Music Hall of Fame on March 1, 2016.

James Smith - "Caught"

I recently heard "Caught" and liked its southern soul sound.  James said that what he did in the dark came to light.  Now isn't that the truth.  He got caught cheating on his wife.  The girl he got cheating with stayed down the street and he was shocked as hell when his wife walked in on them. He got caught up creeping, sleeping in the wrong bed.  Well, there are always consequences to actions...

I'm not familiar with James Smith (looking forward to hearing more of his music) and found some info on him. Here's a small part of his bio as taken from the CDBaby website:
James D. Smith moved to Flint, Michigan from Blytheville, Arkansas in 1965. He began singing in 1967, performing cover hits by the "King of Soul", James Brown. Smith was introduced as "Little James Brown" when he was asked to perform as a follow up act for Al Green at the Motor City Night Club. There, he met Mrs. Glenora, "Ms. G" Roland, who took on the role as James' booking agent. That night was the springboard for his singing career. Ms. G. booked James for performances in numerous hot spots including Cleveland, Ohio and Saginaw, Michigan. James recorded "Mr. Lover Man" and "Play On It" in 1996 and since that time he as recorded over 20 of his songs. In 1997, James established James D. Smith Productions through which he has written scores of songs for himself, other recording artists and Ecko Records. In 1999, "Mr. Lover Man" and "Play On It" were both re-recorded by Chuck Roberson for his national CD release entitled "Love Power".

James Smith has recorded and released six CD's. His latest CD release, titled "James Smith's Greatest Hits" features his new single "Plumber Man".

Till 1 - "Can I Be"

This is a pretty ballad that's been super popular in the southern soul world.  Ladies, guys have feelings, too!  In this song, he's asking for his girl's love, I think he's just asking if he can be her everything.

I don't really know anything about Till 1 and this is the only thing I can find on him as taken from his Facebook page: TILL(aka TILL1.COM) is an actor, singer, songwriter, and model. TILL is an astonishing, versatile rising talent who entices diverse audiences.  His website is still under construction but I'm looking forward to learning more about him.

Z. Z. Hill - "Second Chance" and "It Ain't No Use"

Happy birthday last Friday to the late, great, Z. Z. Hill!!!  What a remarkable artist.  Thanks to WDLT who spotlighted his music on Saturday.

Here are two songs of his that I love - "Second Chance" and "It Ain't No Use."  I won't say they're my favorite because I love so much of his music and he made tons of amazing songs.  These two are at the top of my list.  Most versions of "Second Chance" start about a minute into the song but I found this long version - it's the best and I just have to give you these opening words - I used to recite them ALL the time. lol  This song starts with a woman begging Z. Z. to forgive her and he's trying to reconsider.  But, he says no, he just can't chance it because she just isn't gonna do right.  So she begs and pleads for a second chance.  Oh, do I LOVE this song!  I don't know what the girl did and I wouldn't ever admit to being blind and stupid (lol) but this is classic stuff!!

Well Z. Z., I'll do anything and I promise anything
And I'll keep my promise, I mean it, I'll keep my promise
If you would just forgive me, just reconsider me for
Being so blind and so stupid
I, I mean it, I ain't gonna do it no more

And "It Ain't No Use" is another wonderful classic!  A story of a woman who did him wrong and now she wants to come back home but he makes it clear that it's too late!!  She went away and left him all by himself so now it's her time to cry for her mistakes!

Enjoy!!
