Ms. Jody - "I Ain't Gonna Lie This Time"

Ms. Jody says she was messing around and came home at 5:00 in the morning but her husband woke up when she tip toed across the floor. She was wondering what she was going to do this time, how she was going to get out of this situation. She said don’t ask me no questions and she’ll tell you no lies but to tell you the truth, she didn’t have no alibis.  She said that she’s not gonna lie this time; she’s going to tell the truth.  She said she was out with the girls and lost track of time…what a story!

I ain’t gonna lie this time, I’m gonna tell the truth! You can believe me if you want to!

Taken from Ms. Jody's recently released 'Talkin' Bout My Good Thang' CD.

Enjoy!!

Kirk Whalum - "Do You Feel Me"

While this may not be classified as southern soul, I hear it often on various southern soul stations and I love this instrumental sax song by Kirk Whalum.

Kenne Wayne - "My Angel"

Kenne Wayne has been singing for years and his first album came out around 1996.  Here's his bio as taken from the Soul Blues Music website (http://www.soulbluesmusic.com/kennewayne.htm):
Kenne Wayne (Landry) was born September 3, 1966. He realized he wanted to sing at an early age. As a teenager, he began forming bands and entering talent shows in his hometown of Crowley, LA. In his late teens, he became a member of a popular local band that played around the state of Louisiana.

After years in the local 'chitlin' circuit, Kenne' decided that he wanted more out of music than just performing locally. In 1995, he signed with MTE Records and released his first album, "Old Fashion Love". Not only did this album introduce Kenne' as an artist, it also gave way to his talents as a producer and songwriter. He has co-produced and co-wrote each CD.

Listen to the pretty ballad, "My Angel," which can be found on Kenne Wayne's The Licka Sticka CD.

You're my angel from the stars up above...made just for me.  I never thought this would happen to me.
Enjoy!

Mel Waiters - "Disrespect"

It still hurts knowing that Mel Waiters is gone.  I know that he will definitely live on forever in our hearts and that we are blessed with the beautiful music he's left us, but his passing still hurts.  Here's one of his latest songs from his "True Love" CD that was released earlier this year.

In "Disrespect," Mel wants to know how you think you're going to get respect when you got a bad attitude, you got bad ways, and you walk around with a frown on your face.  He said that you don't speak, you don't smile, seems like it hurts you to open up your mouth. lol  That's right, Mel!!

How do you expect to get respect?

Lomax - "Please Let Me Hold You"

Such a very pretty ballad and a nice begging song. Lomax is at a party and asks a girl to dance; he wants to hold her in his arms. He says, just let me say that I like the way you're holding on to me - what a line but yeah, that would work!! lol

Also love Swing It, Put It All Up In There, Second Hand Man, etc.
Enjoy!

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul - Millie Jackson

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul show was held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on August 1.  It featured Nellie 'Tiger' Travis, Clarence Carter, Latimore, Wilson Meadows, and Millie Jackson.  I love southern soul shows and was thankful to have the opportunity to attend one in the DC/MD/VA area.

The legendary Millie Jackson is a powerful performer.  She has a unique voice but that girl is wild, says anything and everything she wants, is a little vulgar, and is so totally cool. I had her I Had To Say It album and would play it from one end to the other on both sides! Millie Jackson helped change the music industry and was recently inducted into the 2015 Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame. She started her set with no where to turn to, tired of being alone, I feel like breaking up somebody's home. She did a medley of songs: I've been too long in the wind, too long in the rain...; If You're Not Back In Love By Monday; Hurt So Good; a beautiful ballad written by Betty Wright; Leave Me Alone (she said just because she's alone doesn't means she's lonely); and sang her latest songs That Bitch Crazy and Take the bottle, shake it up. I wished she had sung Ask Me What You Want. My criticism is that her overall performance was ok but I was glad I had a chance to see her perform one more time.

Here's a copy of my most favorite Millie Jackson song, If You're Not Back In Love by Monday.

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul - Latimore

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul show was held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on August 1.  It featured Nellie 'Tiger' Travis, Clarence Carter, Latimore, Wilson Meadows, and Millie Jackson.  I love southern soul shows and was thankful to have the opportunity to attend one in the DC/MD/VA area.

Ah Latimore, I love this man and have seen him perform quite a few times.  He still looks sexy with his silver hair - he sounds the same and plays a mean keyboard.  I think he was the crowd favorite that night and is an awesome entertainer.  He sang songs that I wasn't quite sure of the title, but here goes: It ain't where you been, it's where you're going, it ain't what you did, it's what you're doing; Take Me To The Mountaintop (previously done by Lynn White/Willie Clayton) and he did a wonderful job with it; Stormy Monday (a blues song and boy could you feel the blues coming off his keyboard); My Give A Damn Gave Out; Bow Wow (I'm An Old Dog); and ended with his signature Let's Straighten It Out.  Latimore gives you a performance to remember.  Bow wow!!!

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul - Roy C

For health reasons, Roy C could not attend this great show and he was greatly missed.  Thanks to Dr. Nick for asking all of us to keep Roy C in our prayers.

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul - Clarence Carter

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul show was held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on August 1.  It featured Nellie 'Tiger' Travis, Clarence Carter, Latimore, Wilson Meadows, and Millie Jackson.  I love southern soul shows and was thankful to have the opportunity to attend one in the DC/MD/VA area.

This Montgomery, Alabama, native is 79 years old and still kicking! Wow, he can still amaze the crowd and did a great job entertaining us.  If I can only be that good when I get that age... He told us that he was only going to sing the songs that made him a million dollars - and he did:  Too Weak To Fight, Patches, Slip Away, Love Me With A Feeling, and Strokin'!!  I love how he tells stories in between his songs.  One story was about when he was a kid and it was cold outside.  The source of heat for their family's home was by the fireplace and his father told him to make a fire.  Clarence replied by saying, "You're older than me, why don't you make it?"  We can only imagine what his father did to him. lol He said there was a time when children didn't talk back to their parents...and women didn't talk back to their man - oh what did he want to say that for??? lol Clarence Carter knows how to capture the hearts of his fans.

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul - Wilson Meadows

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul show was held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on August 1.  It featured Nellie 'Tiger' Travis, Clarence Carter, Latimore, Wilson Meadows, and Millie Jackson.  I love southern soul shows and was thankful to have the opportunity to attend one in the DC/MD/VA area.

I’ve missed seeing Wilson Meadows perform on a few occasions and wow, I finally saw that night what I had been missing.  He is a great performer, had great backup singers, and has an awesome voice!  I could tell that this northern crowd wasn’t that familiar with his music but he sang his heart out and the man was really good. I think I'm in love! lol

Wilson started his set with Lavert’s Cassanova.  He then moved into Teddy Pendergrass’ When Somebody Loves You Back and then sang many of his hits: I Want to Get Witchu, Thank You Baby, It Is What It Is, Just Like I Promised, and ended with his signature song – Still My Love. My only criticism is that I wanted to hear some of his latest hits like Personal Matter, Can You Hang, Tighten Up, or his current southern soul hit, Sweet It Be.  No matter, he is a great performer and I want to see him again!!

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul - Dr. Nick

I’m writing short reviews on all the performers but I have to take a minute and talk about the MC – Dr. Nick!!!  As concert goers, we often don’t give the emcee proper credit.  We talk about the artists and remember the music but it’s time to spotlight the MC.  What a job they have and what a difference they make!!  The MC sets the tone for the night and controls the flow of the show.  Dr. Nick is smart, handsome, funny, has a dynamic stage presence.  He is great at introducing the groups and entertaining the crowd.  A very hardworking man, Dr. Nick is the man you want to see at the show!  Thank you Dr. Nick for making it a great night!!

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul - Nellie 'Tiger' Travis

The Legends & Heavy Hitters of Soul show was held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on August 1.  It featured Nellie 'Tiger' Travis, Clarence Carter, Latimore, Wilson Meadows, and Millie Jackson.  I love southern soul shows and was thankful to have the opportunity to attend one in the DC/MD/VA area.

Here's my review of Nellie 'Tiger' Travis - keep checking out my blog for other show info.

I’ve seen Nellie in concert several times and she always puts on a fantastic show.  Her voice is a little raspy but very crystal clear and the girl can sing.  No, that girl sang!!!  Her musical lineup included Baby Mama Drama, Superwoman, Who’s Fooling Who, You Gonna Make Me Cheat, If I Back It Up, Cold Feet, and she ended her performance with the famous Mr. Sexy Man.  I still love that song.  Her ballad, Superwoman, was beautiful – ‘no cape in the closet, no magic wand; a woman’s work is never done…’  The most memorable part of the show was when someone in the crowd shouted out a request and wanted her to sing Betty Wright’s Tonight Is the Night.  Nellie started singing the song a capella (we sang along with her) and it was fantastic!  She sang the song for about a minute and everyone, and I mean everyone, was so disappointed when she stopped.  We wanted her to keep going – she was just that good.  The only negative comment I can add is that her band, who were awesome musicians, didn’t do her music justice.  I don’t know if it was because of the acoustics in the building or maybe I was just too far in the back.  A lot of concert goers want to hear artists ‘sound’ like their records and I think the band missed it.  Other than that, Nellie 'Tiger' Travis’ show was great and I look forward to seeing her again – go see her whenever you get a chance!!

Hey, Mr. Sexy Man!!
