Big Yayo - The Interview - "In The Beginning" Part I

Big Yayo is one of the hottest rising artists in the blues and southern soul world.  His "Boots On Song" stayed number one on the charts for months and is the song that still sends everyone to the dance floor.  I had the pleasure of watching him in concert at the Millenial 2 Club in Camden, Alabama, and was impressed with everything about him.  After his great show, he took the time to take pictures with everyone and never rushed anyone who wanted to talk with him.  Big Yayo is truly a kind hearted man and it was a joy talking to him; I was blessed to interview him.

Since my writing of this interview got long, I decided to divide it into three parts:  "The Beginning," "His Destiny," and "Upwards and Onwards!"

Big Yayo - The Interview "In The Beginning"

Big Yayo, born Christopher Mabry, was born and raised in a small town in Mississippi called Goodman, about 55 miles north of Jackson.  He’s from a small family and has one sister, he’s the oldest.

When I asked him a few questions about his youth, his eyes kind of sparkled as he talked about his mom and he spoke very warmly about her.  He said that his mother always encouraged him.  She believed in him and was supportive, no matter what he wanted to do.  If he wanted to play and try a different musical instrument, she would buy it which helped to satisfy both his curiosity and also his desire to play.  Big Yayo says there is an early picture of him holding a real guitar when he was only four years old.  His mother encouraged him to follow his dream.

Big Yayo always loved music and played a wide variety of instruments in school.  His band director was also a major influencer in his life.  When I asked what instrument he played, he said that he played tuba, all types of percussion, the soprano saxophone (which he loves), alto saxophone, and bass saxophone. I was an alto sax player and this is a man after my own heart. He was in the school band.

Out of curiousity, I asked what his first instrument was and he said that he started with the piano.

All of these experiences led him to his destiny.  Read Part 2 of the Big Yayo interview...
