Happy Valentine's Day

Hi, I just wanted to take a moment and wish all of you a very happy Valentine's Day!

I have a perfect southern soul song of the day for you. Have you heard "Carried Away" by Tyrone Davis??? Try to put your hands on it or ask your favorite dee jay to play it for you. Tyrone was so in love with this girl that as he was driving home, he got carried away and lost track of where he was. Is that love or what? He said, "...Thinking about the time you were so good to me...before I knew it, I was ten miles out of the way...to 94, said the highway sign..." On one of my driving trips from Alabama to Maryland, I played this song from Montgomery to the other side of Atlanta. My sons were asleep - for awhile - and although they got tired of hearing it, they can sing it to this day!!!

Again, happy Valentine's Day. Stay tuned for my songs of the month - coming in a couple of weeks!!!

February - Is the Winter Over Yet???

Hello My People,

It's February and the DMV (District, MD, and VA) has more than two feet of snow!! I am so thankful that God has allowed me to keep power - thank you!

I wanted to give you my top southern soul songs for the month. Now, this list was pretty hard to make, but here goes:

1. Rock Me - Stan Moslely I bought this CD for this song but I found out that the entire album is good. I love this song and, as my family knows, I can play this song over and over and over again.
2. I Like This Place - Carl Simms This is just a nice, sing-along kind of song.
3. Good Lovin' Will Make You Cry - Carl Marshall
4. Playing With It - OB Buchana
5. Never Coming Home - Betty Padgett I also love this song.

Bonus Songs: There's more than one this time.
A. If I Could Love You Forever - Roy C - This is a classic song that I know all of my sisters know.

B. Careless With Your Love - Johnnie Taylor - You already know I love JT.

C. Nine Pound Steel - Joe Simon - Daddy, I appreciate this song so much and finally know just how good it is - even though we used to hide this record! I think about you every time I hear it.

If you want to listen to some good southern soul, try WKXN The Big Station (in Montgomery) or southernsoulradio.com. For a list of music, try southernsoulrnb.com.

If you get a chance, let me know the music happening where you are.

Take care.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!! Wow, it's 2010, a new decade and the time to make those infamous resolutions. I know you made one - what's yours? If you tell me, I'll tell you mine! :)

Last year was a good year and I'm going to make sure this one will be even better.

I want to start something new and give you my top five blues songs for the month. It's hard to come up with just five so these can change at any time but this is what they are for now:

1. You're So Freak by David Brinston
This song isn't new and it's on the ever elusive Fly Right CD that's out of circulation. But, it has an awesome beat and even if the lyrics are a little risque, I LOVE it! Thanks Val for finding it for me.

2. Round The World by Latimore
This is fairly new and it just reminds you how great Latimore is.

3. If You're Man Enough to Leave by Karen Wolfe
No words are needed - this is a fabulous song!

4. It Is What It Is by Wilson Meadows
I fell in love with him with Still My Love; this is good dancing music.

5. Anything by TK Soul
He is one of my favorite artists and I love all of his music - it was hard to pick out one song.

Bonus Record
Stop Doggin' Me Around by Johnnie Taylor
JT was the greatest blues singer to me and this record is a classic.

Stay tuned for more...

Christmas Eve

Hello Everyone,

First, I have to apologize for neglecting the blog...procrastination gets me every time! It's Christmas Eve and I'm in sweet home Alabama with Ma - life is good. How are you guys doing? This year is just about over and, in spite of it all, it was a good year. Like one of my favorite dee jays says, it's better to be on top of the ground instead of the ground being on top of you.

For this Christmas, just about my entire family will be together on Saturday. The only ones missing are my oldest son, Dorian, and his family, and my oldest nephew, Jermaine, and his family. We'll be thinking about you guys and we miss you!!!

I'll keep this one short this time. I hope you and your families will have a blessed and beautiful Christmas. Say happy birthday and thank you to Jesus!

Countdown to the End of the Summer

Hello My Friends,

I first want to give thanks to God for ALL the blessings He's given me.

Hey, it's already August - where has the summer gone?

I want to start something new and give you my song of the month. I know that different parts of the country have different #1 songs, so tell me yours!

One of my favorite artists is T.K. Soul and my #1 southern soul song for this month is "Try Me." This ballad is so smooth and the lyrics make it seem as if he's singing right to you. "I can feel, it's the real thing..." will make your heart stop. I love this song.

For you r&b people, you have to listen to "Pretty Wings" by Maxwell. This southern soul girl likes all kinds of music and Maxwell is, and always has been, amazing. Turn this song up loud and listen to the instruments and his voice. Awesome!

Till the next time around...

Hotter Than July

What's going on my southern soul friends? Everything is everything (actually, it's everythang is everythang - lol).

Today is my day off from work and it feels great. I've been listening to southern soul music all day.

If you get tired of listening to regular FM radio, there are three stations I want you to check out.

The first is my favorite, probably because it's in Montgomery and it's what I listen to when I go home. It's WKXN-WKXY - go to www.wkxn.com. They play blues Monday - Friday from 6:00 - 10:00 am and again in the afternoon from 2:00 - 4:00 (Central time). The weekends are the best and they play blues all day. You definitely have to listen to the Lewis Dee Show from 6:00 - 10:00 a.m. (on the second, fourth, and fifth Saturdays). He has a great personality and plays wonderful music; he's awesome.

The second is www.southernsoulradio.com. They even have Mel Waiters as a dee jay on Friday nights!

The third is Chicos Radio.com. Their music is a little bit different than Southern Soul Radio but I love both stations because I get a more well rounded taste of good music!

I keep all three stations listed as my favorites. If you come to visit me, you'll hear one of them playing when you walk in the door.

OB Buchana said that he had to go back home because there wasn't any southern soul music up north. Well, he definitely has a point but what he may not know is that you don't have to depend on the radio stations anymore. With the internet, you can feel at home no matter where you are.

I just heard a song in which the girl said she had on her dancin' shoes and she was in a southern soul party mood. That would be me!

What's going on? I just spent a great Family Reunion weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina! The time went so quickly and it was wonderful seeing everyone. Now, it's time to get ready for the Bonhams in D.C.

I'm also waiting for Darius to be born!!!

I'll be on the road in the morning and, according to the weather forecast, there's only a slight chance of rain tomorrow - yahoo! :)

It's the end of the holiday weekend and time to get ready for the rest of the week. I find that I tend to live for the weekend, but in all reality, I have busy weekdays and life is good.

The thing I enjoy most is water aerobics. I usually take classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and they're a lot of fun. It's amazing the things you can do in water! It's a great workout and so much fun. I've met a lot of nice people and have had great instructors. The best part of class is the after party. Well, it's not really a party, but many of us head straight to the hot tub after class and enjoy ten fabulous minutes of heat. So good...

What do you do that you really like?
