Something Different

This beautiful love song is popular with the old school crowd in DC and I mainly hear it on the weekend on WPFW and WHUR. It's called I Had A Talk With My Man Last Night and it's by Mitty Collier who was with Chess Records. I love this song! Check it out on youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPcKJSw92a0

I had a talk with my man last night
He reassured me everything was still alright
As the night grew light?, my blues got bright
He made me know I was the star of the show
He said he was mine all to myself
And I won’t, and he won’t ever need nobody else
He took me in his arms and turned on my ?alarm
Oh yes he did, yes he did, I had a talk with my man last night

I said I sat down and had a talk
With my man last night
He filled my heart with pure delight
He told me that he needed me
More than words could ever say
And then he went on to prove it in such a sweet, sweet way

He said never again, lonely would you be
And that’s when he asked to marry me
I began to cry he kissed the tears from my weeping eyes
Oh yes he did, yes he did, I had a talk with my man last night

Online Southern Soul Music - It's Paradise!

One of the most beautiful things about the internet is the ability to listen to southern soul 24/7! You don't have to drive to Alabama or Mississippi to hear it anymore. I want to tell you about several online stations that are definitely worth checking out.
1. SBR Radio - Go to Soul & Blues Report (soulandbluesreport.com) and look at their website. They have a ton of info such as Radio Reports from different radio stations all over the south, the top songs that they've reported, SBR Radio where you can listen live, and so much more information.
2. Chicos Radio - www.chicosradio.com.
3. WMPR 90.1 FM in Jackson, MS - www.wmpr901.com/#
4. Moonman Radio out of DC - www.moonmanradio.com/index.html
5. WKXN out of Montgomery - www.thebigstation.fm The music on Saturdays and Sundays is fabulous; the Nic and Nan show on Mondays - Fridays (9 - 2 CST) is pretty good; but the majority of time is spent on the hip hop crowd so I really just listen on the weekend.
6. Try Pandora.com - this is a cool site. You tell it the music you like and they create a station just for you with your style of music - try it.
7. My most favorite southern soul station is www.southernsoulradio.com. It's the station I always go to first.

There's so much southern soul out there so enjoy paradise and try some of these stations. If you know of some radio stations that stream online, send a quick email to southernsoulparadise@hotmail.com and I'll share your info with others. Until next time...

October!

October almost got by me but I made it! How are you? I've been to 'sweet home Alabama' since my last entry and there's nothing like being home with Mom. It was also great being in the land of blues and southern soul. While there, I listened to Selma's 105.3 because they play southern soul in the morning and a little through the day. WKXN has gotten away from the blues and I mainly listen to them just on Saturdays and Sundays. I'll be doing another blog soon to let you know of the tons of southern soul stations you can hear online.

Now to the music - here are my top ten picks for the month:
1. She's My Woman by Marvin Sease...He says that he wants the whole wide world to know she's his woman, she's his baby girl.
2. Bad Love Affair by Marvin Sease...I recently told my sister that Marvin is so much more than Candy Licker and that his music is really good. In this song, he says that the reason he looks like this is because he's trying to get over a bad love affair.
3. If They Can Beat Me Rockin' by Vick Allen...I have been listening to him for awhile now, but his music has hit me hard and I LOVE him.
4. I'm Hooked by Vick Allen...So far, this is my favorite one of his songs. You've got to listen - he's a genius:
She’s got me hooked
Like she done put a root on me
Got me going crazy and I just can’t let her be
She do me wrong but I just can’t shake her, ya’ll
She got me messed up, she got me gone
5. Don't Give Up On Me by Clarence Dobbins...This is a pretty love song.
6. Your Man Is Home Tonight by J. Blackfoot
7. One Man's Loss by Willie Clayton...Everything he touches is awesome.
8. Lover Boy by Johnnie Taylor...I bought this CD because he is the king of southern soul.
9. The End of the Rainbow by McKinley Mitchell...An oldie but goody and man oh man is this good.
10. Let Me Be Your Daddy by Lebrado...I saved the best for last. Have you ever had a song get under your skin and you just have to get up and move every single time you hear it??? Well, this is it for me.
So you got a man but you’re still lonely
Say he doesn’t make you feel much like a woman
But you stay
You don’t need that drama in your life
Let me take you from this tonight
Cause I want to love you
Treat you like the woman that you are, girl you know you are my superstar
This is the chorus:
When you’re sick and tired of being his woman
You can come over and you can get your groove back
Baby, when you’re sick and tired of being his momma
You can come over and I can be your daddy, let me play your daddy

Woohoo!!!! Good music!

When you get a chance, youtube all of these fabulous songs. Until next time, have your own southern soul paradise!!

It's September!

Labor Day is here and it looks as if we're wrapping up another summer. I'm a warm-weather person and I never look forward to the cold. I will enjoy these nice temps as long as I can.

Southern soul music is alive and well and the internet just makes it all so good. I've told you about WKXN.com and southernsoulradio.com, but there are oh so many other stations out there. Go to soulandbluesreport.com and you'll find a wealth of information. Different radio stations send in their top songs - take a look at the Radio Reports tabs and see the music playing all over the country. You may even find some links to some websites that play southern soul - it's great.

Here are my top songs for September:
1. Never Coming Home - Betty Padgett
2. You Win Some - David Brinston (I haven't heard this alot but it is good music.)
3. I'm Hooked - Vick Allen
4. Just Got Started Lovin U - Queen Emily (I thought this was Lynne White when I first heard it - good song.)
5. Aint That Loving You - Luther Ingram (You think I love you for just one thing; to you, my love, it maybe the way it seems...aint that loving you for more reasons than one. What an awesome love song.)
6. Careless With Our Love - Johnnie Taylor (I love him!)
7. No Getting Over Me - Willie Clayton
8. Around The World - Latimore
9. Just Because - Johnnie Taylor (I know I included this song last month but I had to list it again.)
10. I'll Understand - The Soul Children (An oldie but goodie!)

Enjoy your September!

August - Summer's Almost Over

It's August and there's nothing like good music to make the day better. I've probably mentioned this before, but I want to talk about two places where you can check out great southern soul. My all-time favorite internet radio station, primarily on the weekend (unless you can listen from 10 - 3 through the week), is WKXN in Montgomery, Alabama. They also have towers in Greenville and Pine Hill. Go to www.thebigstation.fm - they play southern soul all weekend long. Lewis Dee is on the air on the second and fourth Saturdays and is worth listening to. He has a great personality and the music he plays is fantastic. My other station is Southern Soul Radio at southernsoulradio.com. I listen to them every night through the week. So, since you're already online, try thebigstation.fm (WKXN) and southernsoulradio.com and let me know what you think. If you know any other southern soul sites/online stations, let me know.

Ok, now for my top ten.

1. Two-Way Love Affair - David Brinston
2. Think About You All The Time - Ronnie Lovejoy
I've listed this song before but I had to repeat it because I adore
it. It is such a beautiful love song. Think about you from Monday
to Sunday....
3. Just Because - Johnnie Taylor
You know I love JT and this is also a beautiful love song. He says I love you, what else can I do or say?
4. I Like This Place - Carl Simms
5. Let's Go Dancing - Donnie Ray
This, like most of these songs, is several years old but is great.
6. Mr. Bus Driver - J. Blackfoot
7. Fly Right - David Brinston
Now this is the ultimate jam. I need to straighten up and fly right...
Awesome!!!! I love this song.
8. Drown In My Own Tears - Johnnie Taylor
9. Tonight Is The Night - Betty Wright
Betty Wright, JT, and Tyrone are all crossover singers. These
artists were mainstreamed into r&b, but they are definitely southern
soul.
10. A&B Conversation - Kennye Wayne
He says I'm going to C my way out of it. He is just so wrong in this
song, so wrong.

Bonus - check out both Johnnie Taylor's and TK Soul's versions of Try Me Tonight. They're both good.

Until next time, stay safe - see you in September!!

Hot Fun In The Summertime!

Wow, what happened to June??? I kind of missed that month and I'm sliding into the middle of July. What's up with you? Are you having a great summer? I am! Went on a cruise in June to the Cayman Islands and Cozumel with my son and his family and friends and had a blast. I just spent a great week in Alabama with my mom who successfully went through knee replacement surgery. We had a chance to spend a lot of quality time together and I am so thankful for her (and my sisters) and the time we had. I'm ready to go back!!

Here are my songs for the month. It's always hard for me to choose, but here goes:

1. Ain't Gonna Do It - Mel Waiters - I LOVE this song!
2. Baby Sittin' - Johnnie Taylor - classic, mellow JT
3. Just One Lifetime - J Blackfoot - smooth
4. I Wanna Get Witcha Baby - Wilson Meadows
5. I've Got To Love Somebody's Baby - Johnnie Taylor (because somebody's lovin' mine)
6. Close To You - Tyrone Davis - simply beautiful
7. I'm Going Crazy Over Losing You - Willie Clayton
8. I'm Leaving Your Love Behind - William Bell
9. Did You Put Your Foot In It - OB Buchana - ("I made her scream OB, OB, ooh boy, what 'chu doing to me?") I love this song!
10. Do You Qualify - Marvin Sease

I won't stay away as long next time. Until then, take care and send me an email to let me know your southern soul favorites - I'll spotlight them next month: southernsoulparadise@hotmail.com!

May Day

May Days were a huge thing when I was young. My sisters and I would look forward to going to Anniemanie and participate in the biggest social event of the spring. We walked around so we could be seen and so we could also see everyone. We spent the afternoon watching the baseball games and had so much fun. Life was good. Music was a big part of my life then just as it is now. I have a new list of songs for May and, as usual, it's hard to limit myself to ten songs. But, here are my picks for the month - I love each and everyone one of these songs:

1. Unconditionally - Willie Clayton
2. Swing Out Song - Mel Waiters
3. Slow and Easy - Lynne White
4. Whenever You Come Around - Little Milton
5. Keep Your Head to the Sky - Earth, Wind, & Fire (not exactly blues but a classic)
6. Gettin' What I Want - Peggy Scott Adams
7. Show Me What You Got - Marvin Sease
8. Ice Chest - Mel Waiters
9. I'll Drink Your Bathwater - Ollie Nightingale
10. Smaller the Club - Mel Waiters

Thanks to Val and Tom, this month's bonus song is Wilson Meadows' It Is What It Is. This is a fabulous song that makes you want to dance!!!

Hope you're able to join a May Day somewhere - have fun!

April Breezes

Are you thankful for another beautiful month? I know I am! I've taken a day off work and I adore being home. I could really do this every day! The one problem I have is that I can listen to music all day long and, as a result, I don't get much done. I listen to the radio but more often than not, I'm on the internet. I've told you before about WKXN, the station out of Montgomery, and I've also mentioned southernsoulradio.com. I was online today with Southern Soul Radio and found out that you can watch their broadcast live and you can also chat with the dee jay!!! I don't like admitting this, but I used to be addicted to chatting, mainly on Yahoo. I loved it and used to stay in a room every evening. So today, I had a chance to chat with the dee jay and he played a song that I requested - You're So Freak by David Brinston. That song makes me get up and move every time! :) Thanks Southern Soul Radio for making my day!

Here are my songs for April. I apologize but I have to give you ten this month. I was going to stick to my normal five but then I had so many bonus ones that I decided to group them all together.

1. Did You Put Your Foot In It by O.B. Buchana
There's something about this song that I love.

2. Just One Life Time by J. Blackfoot
This is a mellow song that's really nice.

3. Pack Your Bags by Vick Allen
This has been out for awhile but I like it; the more I hear it, the more it grows on me.

4. Tonight Is The Night by Betty Wright
What can I say? This is a classic!

5. Show Me What You Got by Marvin Sease
Marvin has staying power and puts out good music.

6. Honey Poo by Rue Davis
This song came out years ago but it is one of two songs that got me back into the blues. I call it a classic, too.

7. Oh Honey by the Delegation
This isn't southern soul, but it is an old favorite of mine.

8. What Our Love Needs by King Floyd
Many people I know don't think of Groove-Me-King-Floyd as southern soul, but he is. This song is from the 70s I think and still sounds good.

9. Unchained Melody by Al Green
For all you who know me, you know I'm an Al Green fan. I think this song is at the top of my favorites list...I love it.

10. Trying to Hold On To My Woman by Lamont Dozier
There's a 7-minute version of this on youtube - turn the volume up and listen to it. It's awesome!!!

Now even though I've done ten songs, I have to give you a bonus song anyway. It's Fistful of Tears by Maxwell. Yes, I know, this isn't southern soul but I love Maxwell so I included him!!!

Please take a second and give me your favorite songs. Keep listening to the music and be happy! Let it lift you and take you wherever you need to go.

Till next time...
